I'm really enjoying this story, just one technical thing though. It likely would have been quite easy to convince Washington to keep Sam on the base. When someone involved in a top secret project goes to the hospital and/or receives any sort of strong pain killers or muscle relaxers, they have to be monitored by someone else with the security clearance and knowledge. This is done to keep then from disclosing any classified information while out of it and to possibly collect any information that they may not have previously disclosed. While Sam was under heavy pain meds she wouldn't have been allowed to be mixed in with a crowd.
Other than that I'm really enjoying this story. You are blending these worlds masterfully.
