*long wistful sigh*

Oh this is just GORGEOUS. The descriptions, the dialogue, the way you've set the scene is just absolutely flawless ...

More? More of anything like this?

I'm slightly teary at the end of that. I suppose a whole lot is the "mood music" I have playing - I've got a classical artist singing Who Wants to Live Forever? I've kind of left her on loop to read this. When Mr Brightside started a couple of paragraphs into the last flashback, I was like, nonono.

This was beautiful. Mildly heartbreaking, but you've left it open enough for the optimists like me to dream that he does survive and get home to his Bella. Who you don't name until the very, very end, which I was another little detail I liked.

That and Edward's voice. It was old-fashioned, but not to the point of tedium, and that can be a fine line - I believed him. And you had detail - dance cards, the clothes, the history. Which, by the way, I know nothing about. I am absolutely taking the American Civil War module next year, or perhaps I could get a book out of the library. I looked in my first week.

Emmett and the manservant at the end made me smile - if the story had been any less haunting, I probably would have giggled - and Edward's innocennce and naivete was just so endearing.

In short, I loved it.

So sweet, so beautifully tender & loving. Praying that Edward indeed was taken to hospital & recovered...*wipes* away a tear*

This is an amazing one shot! I almost cried at the end, so I have to ask: was it actually Bella at the end or a hallucination or just someone on the battlefield calling his name?

At the end when he hears her is she actually there, like physical form- next to the stretcher or in the darkness? And if he heard her why didn't he fight a bit longer? Very well written though. The language is almost perfectly fitting for this timeframe.

Hey, Babette! Sorry it took me so long to read this. It was truly beautiful. I love the way you wove the past flashbacks with the present pain. Very unique and different, and it flowed really well. I can't help but feel a sense of sadness at the end, wondering if he lives or if he truly fell into "that" sleep. But the story was so lovely and incredibly well done in the language you used and the feelings of the characters. I really liked it. Thanks for putting it out there!

So lovely, Ann. I cried and cried while reading it-the best litmus test I know for a good story. Your writing is lovely, and the ending so poignant. So glad you're writing!

OMG! I couldn't help myself and had to read this... now I'm kicking myself, but OMG it was SO good so not really hard, obviously! GAH! I'm so torn and holy HALE we're in for some angst... although a Civil War story should be the first indicator, but whatever! I'm going to hold out for a HEA... I know he's not dead, but who said Edward at the end... was it Bella or was he hallucinating?

I loved that you didn't say their names until the end. The way you went into and outside of his mind while he was laying there was brilliant! You did it seamlessly... you definitely have some writing chops! The flow was perfect. I can hardly contain myself about this story. It still floors me to find stories that are so well done in FF. YAY! This was truly beautiful! It's going to be so hard when they have to part and he goes off to war. I still don't totally understand his need to go to battle, but I'm going to shrug that off as a guy thing that I will never understand... poor Bella... Hopefully it won't be a "Cold Mountain" thing where he finally finds his way home only to die or something equally devastating... It's E and B, and they always have happy endings...right?

Thank you!

Great story, but the ending confused me.

Beautifully done, but I hope that wasn't truly the end. A continuation would be wonderful.
