Good look at the theme of the choices that define us. I hadn't really thought about the fact that if she had stepped away, it would be as a different woman. Thank you for making me think.
Your writing has wonderful little descriptor in it. I especially liked this phrase: "The surface of the river is dark, almost black, the turbid waters carrying pieces of trash and tree branches to an uncertain final destination." Very apt analogy for Lily's situation.

There is something quietly jarring about this piece. You can see, right from the beginning that something has changed in Lily but it's not until the end that it becomes clear. You make explicit what Severus says throughout; "It is our choices that show us what we truly are." In choosing to let her son die, Lily became someone completely different; something empty. Very nice.

Wow, this is absolutely lovely. The shadow theme, and the way Lily slowly fades, bit by bit...beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I love how Severus realizes that Lily is no longer really 'there' or that she isn't the person he thought she'd be.
