Well written, powerful story that made me a lot more understanding of Elrond's motivations. Thank you for the time that went into this. I especially liked the new depth it gave to the LOTR scene when the fellowship departs.

Wow, what a powerful piece of writing. So very sad. Elrond really did lose so much in his life. He is very strong elf.
I especially liked the parting of Celebriab and Elrond. I never fully understood why Elrond stayed behind. I knew it was because of Vilya, but I never really understood the full weight of it until now.

I finally got around to reading this, and I have to say, it did not disappoint. I liked it not only for the detailed account of Elrond's history, but also, mostly, for the insight into his character you took from his back-story. The conversation at the end that was taken from FotR has so much more impact when you frame it in terms of all that Elrond went through, as you have here. Once again, an excellent and thought-provoking gap filler.

Wow. That was intense. Poor Elrond! I hadn't considered before how tragic his life had been. I also begin to understand why Tolkien called death the boon of man. This little story must have taken a lot of research. Thanks for the insights!

Dragged from 'retirement' twice in one week - it's too much!
This was a tremendous, if somewhat harrowing, introduction to Elrond's back-story and, having never read The Silmarillion, I now feel I understand him and the reasons for his words and actions a little better.
PS - Also awaiting LLS update

This is excellent! Compelling and moving, not in a way that made me cry but in a way that made me empathise with Elrond and which made him more accessible. You have drawn together the parts of the story that are there in The Silmarillion and LOTR but which aren't as cohesive as you have presented them here - and you have embellished them with the story behind the story. Well done and thank you.

You know Thundera I swear you were there and Elrond was your best friend. That was beyond excellent. Hugs The Imp

18Shipwright's Trick
One of the darkest pieces I have ever read on this website. (Coincidentally, you are the author of some of the others...) Poor Elrond; he's lost just about everyone. : (
This gives a great deal of insight to Elrond's parting words to the Fellowship; even though they make sense already, this depth is a good thing, if a painful thing.
Thank you for a good read! Perhaps it isn't exactly accurate to say that I enjoyed it, but I did. : )

This story was well worth the work that went into it. Elrond is one of the most complex and enegmatic characters in Tolkien's cast, and yet there are precious few stories that open his heart to the reader in the way that yours has done. My only regret is that this story is so short - you've got such a compelling and sympathetic perspective that I wish that you could have written more.
I like the way that you were able to fill in gaps in the canon with events that make sense and are so believable. The way that your story threads culminated in Elrond's final comment was quite nicely done.
I think that it isn't too late to get this into MEFA for the year. Do you have someone to nominate it? If not, drop me a line and I'll nominate it.
Excellent piece, Thundra. Thanks for sharing your gift of writing with us.
