I guess I can't agree with the other review. Darken has done terrible things, no doubt about it. However, Kahlan has devoted her live to see him murdered. As a ruler, it would be a very pragmatic, and even wise, decision, to put her to death. Yet he gives her a choice - a pretty generous one considering the problems she has caused him in the past. Whether or not he is a jerk is totally a matter of the point of view.
