I always enjoy these little possible insights into the brothers' childhood, especially the camping incident. I loved the exploration of the both the boys' guilt- Don for feeling he neglected his brother and Charlie for ruining Don's birthday.

It was also interesting to note that, quite correctly, you depicted the fact that Alan doesn't seem to once consider his own responsibility in this whole mess. I'm so glad that this story portrays the fact that the person most at fault in this situation was Alan (even if he couldn't see it himself), instead of it being the case of 'bad, evil Don and little saint Charlie'. Don might have felt guilty for the situation all the way to adulthood but he was a child and he should never have been left responsible for another younger child. In fact, Charlie should never have been there in the first place since an eight-year-old has no place in a group of boisterous thirteen-year-old boys whose only concern should be having fun.

Poor Don - even as a child he was expected to be Charlie's protector. How very unfair of Alan and Margaret to place such a responsibility on the shoulders of their elder son.

And what were they thinking?

It was Don's birthday - wasn't he entitled to a day - just one day, which placed him and not Charlie, firmly in the spotlight for once?

Alam's response to Don once Charlie went missing was cruel and unreasonable. He was the adult - ultimately, he was responsible. Not a thirteen year old boy who was supposed to be having fun on his birthday!
