Well, it's not quite 5 years on, but a lot of time and canon has passed since you wrote this fic and it's stood that test magnificently. I somehow had your fic on that 'meaning to read some day' mental list for a while now.
Well, that some day came and I read it all in one day, on my cell phone, with enforced breaks in between chapters bc 'real life' demanded that I do the dishes/take the dog for a walk/interact with people. In those breaks from reading, I thought about your story and wondered what would happen next.
A very few things are outdated by later canon but the characterizations still hold true. Particularly you've written the best Kondou I've seen in fic. The Shinsengumi as a whole - with their strange, delicate relationships among themselves and to Gintoki - are the characters that stick most with me.
The beauty of the writing was also a huge part of my enjoyment. There are so many sentences in your story where I stop, struck by the mangificence of your expression. It's been a couple weeks since I finished reading and two bits in particular have stayed with me, becoming part of how I view these characters. One heart-warming and so true:

This story was so punny! I loved the crack mixed in with the drama and sad bits. It was like chocolate covered bacon! (unless you don't like bacon). I wish there were more Gintama stories like yours. You have done a fantastic job *applause*

Alright, so ... yes. Thank you. Just, thank you - SO - much. I've only recently gotten into Gintama (I'm still on season one), and I just adore its crackiness; however, being the hurt/comfort junkie I am, I can't help but be drawn to the flashes of angsty backstory, the hints of nakama and family bonding, the *potential* for delicious h/c. Naturally, this drove me to fanfiction.
And this ... this fic ... ! You win. I give you all the prizes. What prizes? I dunno, just take them. I am so grateful. This just *really* hit the spot. Thank you.

This was amazing. I just read it all and it was really something else.
That it's the best Gintama fic I've seen goes without saying, but it's also one of the best stories I've read in any of the fandoms I frequent. The characters were spot on, the intrigue was gripping and I loved your action scenes.
Gintoki slowly beginning to act strangely, Sougo's reaction to Hijikata going down, Kyuubei politely asking if she could enter after catching Matako... There's so many gems in there I probably missed some. So I'll probably need to read it again, lucky me :)
I'm not sure if it's clear from the first few paragraphs (I think it might be, but do you really mind superflous praise?), but let me reiterate: I absolutely love this story. And now I'm off to stalk your profile to see if you have any more Gintama stories.

Amazing story! It's a kind of old fanfiction so I don't know if you're even going to read it, but even so! I should totally have gone to bed, like, two hours ago, but I just couldn't because this fanfic is so damn good. I hope I can finish it today, even though it's already 3 AM! I find it rather incredible; the way I imagined Gintoki finally meeting the other two yorozuya members was exactly the way you wrote it out. It rather creeped me out; literally, step by step. :D
I also hugely enjoyed the talk between Hijikata and Gintoki. It was so in-character it's hard to imagine that this isn't a direct extract from the show.

Hahahaa, I'm so late to the party, but anyways... I watched the whole Gintama series just recently, and remembered that you had a fic from the series... And whoa I'm so glad that I checked this out. I don't even know where to begin, the characterisation, the Gintama-esque crack humor, the action and the fluff balancing together... Heh, so many emotions while reading this :D Just a wonderful fic. This combined pretty perfectly the elements I love about the original series too! And the wide variety of characters you used here... I do love the Yorozuya the most, being the little dysfunctional family they are, but it was nice to have appearances from many of the other characters I adore from the series!

I can't believe where you've taken this fic! And I must say, I love it. The intense fights, the bonds between the characters, the intense emotion - it's so perfect I could almost cry. You even got the strengths right, without any bias. Hijikata WOULD be defeated like that, and Okita WOULD last that much longer.
I'd also like to specifically mention how brilliantly you're portraying Gintoki. That's almost exactly what he'd be acting like. You can feel the cold, hard pain coming alive from out of the screen. I'm hanging on to every word, and I'm enjoying every moment.
