Hey There!
I'm so sorry that this review is so overdue, but please, let me explain.
I've been reading this from the beginning, and just now talking about it is unravelling so many FEELINGS that you've given me that I'm experiencing this sort of numb sensation.
I'm not sure if I've reviewed before: so if I have, just think of this as a new leaf; if I haven't then think of this as a nice new start _
And I'm so sorry that this review is so delayed and I know that I have no excuse and that the one I'm about to give you is absoultely terrible - but I didn't know that you updated. BUT how that I DO know - I'm going to shower you in the awesomeness that you deserve!
I love this story (like the opener?)
You've created such a classic story of young people but carries quite adult emotions.
You're character development is one of the best I've read.
Arthur... where do we begin?! Let me rant okay ;) ? I can't remember EVERYTHING (but I think I'm doing pretty well) but from what I can (and so sorry if this sounds stupid or just down-right wrong XD) But I believe Arthur... doesn't really know what basic human affection is. I'm guessing he has so many great expectations of him that now, he just feels crushed inside, but he's thr type to know that he can't feel that way, or believes he can't, so puts on a brave face for the whole - in his case more precisely, just making the world think he doesn't care. But he DOES care... and so much that he spends nights just wondering WHY he feels THIS strongly about everything. He has a father who I'm guessing does love him really, who has good intentions, but has the completely wrong methods, and it's starting to burn into Arthur. (I've just had a horrible thought that maybe Arthur doesn't have a father in this but I'm pretty sure he does). His father expects so much of him that Arthur wants to raise himself to that standard, but knows it's impossible. And therefore feels like HE'S failed his father. (I'm pretty sure he has Morgana as his sister) who sees the way Arthur's spiraling downwards and wants to help but doesn't know if she can, if Arthur hasn't completely shut himself to her - not in spite - but not wanting to show 'weakness'. I'm pretty sure his mother's died, which weighs on his conscience greatly. I'm pretty sure he's doing okay at school - but could be so much more if he tried, or had the right inspiration, had a bit more WARMTH in his life...
Here comes in Merlin, who thought he wanted something normal.
But Merlin's going through a similar thing - he's had to pick himself up from the dirt others have put on him, Merlin's been beaten black and blue... and sometimes I'm not sure if he thinks into a better shape or not. Merlin believes he has to be independent now - that he has to carry himself for his uncle (and his mum) and not show any signs of doubt or lack of anything that would disappoint them.
And when you put them together... two halves - you get a whole (so cheesy right, put it's true _)
Although Arthur's 'in control' with the whole servant thing - I think he feels a great gratitude towards Merlin, because Arthur knows that if Merlin REALLY wanted to, he COULD just walk away, but he hasn't - and I believe Arthur feels very attached to Merlin, who he thinks is interesting, funny, sweet, kind and a little weird but he sees the fire in Merlin and... he wants the warmth, Arthur's so cold and tired, that he's actually now based his whole life around Merlin. But he won't show it - for the fear that Merlin will leave.
But Merlin won't - because although Arthur's exterior is everything that Merlin should hate... he's looked closer and saw the raw being underneath - it's been only for moments, but Merlin's seen something that could safe HIM - Arthur could save Merlin from thoughts of 'you're not good enough'.
And now I'm going to paraphrase Stardust, because it fits (I think).
It's unpredictable, uncontrolable, unexpected and unbearable to be without... and a huge mistake for loathing... but I think they do love each other - two wondering, wandering souls... now finding a landslide of liquid gold just... maybe... within reach.
P.S. Sorry for the delay and if any was wrong - but I'm running on memories from when Vortex was updated and will now proceed to READ ON! when I can cos now I have to go shopping. But I'll be around soon _

Honestly at first I was actually upset and frustrated with Merlin. At times I didn't even comprehend how someone could be that submissive (and with my history I know just how pretty pathetic people can be). But as the story progressed, I felt the characters become much more real. Much more fleshed out, understandable, and relateable. I really feel bad for Arthur, at first I really wanted Merlin to just punch him over and over. But now I pity him, and Merlin. Freya's right; its not healthy the way Merlin acts but if someone is like that what can you do for them? Although I would expect those that care for Merlin, especially Will, to stand up to Arthur. I AM upset with Gaius though, he's a terrible parental figure in terms of supporting/standing up for Merlin in the beginning even though he's a pretty chill Uncle. Anyways, thank you very much for this story. I get why it has so many follows/reviews etc..., this story, unlike most Merthur, really delve into this non-fairytale-like relationship that is much more (I can't think of any other word than "real"). This story holds much more weight than the average Merthur story because it is able to fully convey an intense emotional turmoil without making a mockery or oversimplified or exaggerated means. What happens rarely, but I think you've captured beautifully is I'm not being told some cliche narrative; I'm learning and feeling the pain and confusion and drama of a very distinct and unique "your" character. Thank you and I'm eager for more!
