I just read basically all of your CJ stories and I love them so much! This story is definitely my favorite, I know how it is to lose a close friend as a teen and you potray it wonderfully...
I don't know what made me think of this but I think an interesting CJ story would be something that involves a hospital again, but this time she is either seriously hurt (from a prank) or something minor like appendicitis and she doesn't tell anyone that her stomach hurts till it bursts... this is the one time she doesn't get punished or something because she was actually hurt or they do punish her (teasingly) because she didn't tell them... i don't know, if I wrote I'd make a Tiva child story like that but I totally don't...

Very realistic emotions indeed. especially on the parents sisde of things, we do feel enormous relief when our children survive such castophries, and guilt about those who didn't and all the what if's and if only's can drive us nuts.
The legal rammifications of Avery's journey is still on the horizon, he will need he's friends more than anyone.

Very moving and well written. You handle the 16 year olds perspective very realistically. I'm sure that question will raise it's head many more times in their lives. Memories and their associations, their triggers are very interesting. Simon and Garfunkles .. El Condor Pasa ( If I could) " I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail" is sometimes a memory trigger for me and sometimes a simple answer.

How you can keep writing this is beyond me. Your words are just right and have the feel of personal experience. I hope you are finding healing and not just pain in reliving old memories. Keep up the great work.
