Brilliant. I rarely read outside of Katniss/Peeta but I'm very glad I gave this a go - you captured Haymitch perfectly.
I had never for even half a second considered the angle of the background you gave Haymitch and Finnick. It's twisted and bitter and perfect in a horrible way. The little details - his journals, his family, his relationship with Effie - the comments of being too sober when he was so well known and so constantly assumed to be drunk... I love how very realistic you are with the world of your stories. You've a fan in me.

Tears. Beautiful, between Fin and the toast. His recognition of Katniss being the closest thing to a daughter to him. Beautiful and moving chapter. Brought me back to "The Storm" and how much I loved this part of that story!

Haymitch remembering every tribute, holding journals of every friend, victor, child that was taken by the Games is incredibly bittersweet.
The many layers of our ol'drunken, sour and bitter mentor, hiding in that facade a big caring heart, a remorseful conscience and a flicker of hope ...
Haymitch is my 2nd favorite HG character (2nd to Peeta of course!) because his rotting self had spirit, had courage and wit and cared from the very beginning. he was crushed just as much as the other characters, and he had the immense strength to push through his own pain and do what he thought was right.

Wow. So many shattering truths here:
""He's hurting too, Gale. I just want to help him. Nobody else is helping him, they never have."
"no more abandonment than what you do with the bottle"
The gossip lady acknowledging outloud that Peeta had lost it ALL and had nowhere to go
Heartbreaking
How everyone revolved around Katniss to "help" her, while Peeta was left to his own devices and treated like a leper
Hurting for Peeta here. I read "The Storm" and my heart crunched up in many knots for him. Reading Haymitch's pov on the matter makes it even sadder as he failed the boy and it's starting to recognize how badly he's wronged Peeta. :(

This chapter was so gut wrenching, it was hard to read. That's the point though, isn't it, to help us understand the torment people put themselves through and the ones around them, so we can avoid it in our own lives? You have a masterful writing style and you manage the tricky relationship between these 2 damaged people so well; a lifetime alcoholic and a girl with suicidal tendencies, could they ever really help each other?

Stupid, someones point of view is in the form of I, not he.

My heart weeps for Haymitch and Evaline. He's so far away now from the man who was capable of loving someone, romantically, that much. I hope there's a happy ending for Haymitch :) and broken, desperate Katniss is always heartbreaking ofc.

Excellent fic! And this last chapter was truly an exceptional way to bring it all to a close. You summed it all up so well. Regarding the fic as a whole, you wrote all of the characters extremely well, most especially Haymitch. You put so much insight into why he is the way he is and so much detail into the demons that haunt him that you really explained him as well as most anyone could.
I also liked that we grew to understand his relationship with Katniss so much better here. I felt for Peeta's frustration in The Storm when he wanted, for once, to be let in on their secret master plan. No matter what, Haymitch and Katniss's relationship would always have some level that only they could get or see. Peeta might understand that they were two people who were too alike and cared so much about each other, but they still COULDN'T HELP pushing each other's buttons. Still, I can understand Peeta's frustration with not really knowing what was going on because of the intense, push/pull connection that Katniss and Haymitch shared, and it was good to see all of the scenes in this fic that led up to K & H's clearing of the air (though we know that they'll probably have occasional spats forever, because of their fiery tempers and stubbornness).
Another bit from earlier in the fic that I enjoyed was when Katniss made a reference to no one else ever being there to save Peeta (something to that effect). It's so true. In 74, he almost died there in the muddy river bank until the rules changed to allowing two Victors from the same District. Then, Katniss saved him. In the Quarter Quell, it was understood among the rebel Victors that he be kept alive because Katniss would fall apart if she no longer had her mission of making sure that Peeta survived. So, he was a tool, then, rather than the one whom they wanted to save. Then, no one saved him from being captured by the Capitol, and he was tortured for a very long time and made to be a weapon against Katniss and the rebellion. The kindest, least-deadly Victor ever, turned into a mutt who hated and feared Katniss to the point that he'd try to kill her more than once. He was only rescued from the Capitol's torture after Katniss's mental instability became just a little too impractical for the rebellion to use her as their Mockingjay, again not to rescue him because he ought to be rescued. He's lost his entire family in the bombing of Twelve and is completely alone in the world, except for Katniss and his friends. Even after being rescued and brought to Thirteen, he's essentially alone because of the violent tendencies he now has and his inability to trust his memories, thereby knowing whom he CAN trust (besides Delly, of course). Then, here and in The Storm, he was sent back to Twelve too soon and forced to suffer in his hijacking episodes without trained psychological help and in a safe environment in which he couldn't harm himself or others. Also, in this fic and The Storm, Haymitch doesn't seem too fond of him, either; Katniss is his priority and Peeta is dangerous and a threat to her. So, he doesn't REALLY have his old Mentor, either (though did he ever TRULY have Haymitch completely, if he weren't a package deal with Katniss). So, I was really impacted when Katniss made that comment to Haymitch about no one ever really saving Peeta and how he's always been abandoned and left to fend for himself, more or less. I love when a fic helps me to truly, deeply see something that my multiple readings of the books hasn't really impressed upon me, and you did that here.
I also enjoyed the subplot about Haymitch's relationship with Effie. That had some depth to it, and I really enjoyed knowing that he had someone, in addition to Katniss and Peeta.
Finally, I always smiled or laughed when Haymitch referred to Gale as "the damn Ninja" or whatever it was. I tend to forget about how Gale could move as quietly as Katniss. So, the image of him dressed all in black (and possibly wearing a mask and repelling down noiselessly from a ceiling panel) like a Ninja assassin always amuses me with its incompatibility with this bleak, dystopian world in which people could starve if they didn't hunt their own game. So, nice touch with these little bits of humor that you were able to weave into Haymitch's thoughts. :-)
