Hm, I should mention that Maya's father walked out on them when she was twelve, after which her mother picked them all up and moved to Los Angeles to start over. It didn't work quite as well, since they were dead broke and then Maya's brother joined a gang to try to get them back on their feet. Now Maya's a bit of a fighter, but she's still angry at her father for walking out on them and jealous of people who have more money than they do.
