Horatio always feels keenly for the innocent victims in his cases and it seems this particular one has hit him harder than usual. I love the descriptive way you described his underlying sadness after closing the case. As much as Horatio disliked the brash and arrogant Mayor he feels bad for the man and how his family has been torn apart from the deep-seated problems that had been allowed to fester for years.
I'm so glad that Lauren called him, I can just imagine him sitting alone at home with a paltry dinner, brooding. It warms my heart to see that Lauren considers her home to be wherever Horatio is and that he himself has been honest enough to tell her how lost he feels without her.
I have really enjoyed this story, such a rich and colourful world you have created. Am looking forward to starting in your next piece!

Kate now finally understands the damage she has done to her children by being so emotionally distant towards them. All Kelly ever wanted was to be loved and wanted by her mother and it is easy to see why she acted with such jealousy and anger towards Maria, to her it seemed as if the young woman had a place in her mother's heart that she was never able to inhabit and that must have cut very deeply.
Nice use of a Tolstoy reference too, seems like the case has taken a lot out of Horatio. I liked the comments about unhappy families and how Horatio longs for one of his own, something that he has been without for so long, the argument with Lauren still seems to be weighing heavily on him. Only one more chapter to go, will he and Lauren sort out their differences? I hope so.

It makes me laugh that the Mayor is such a pompous ** that he assumes Horatio bringing his wife in for questioning was all about the lieutenant trying to get back at him. I like how you had Horatio deal very calmly with Jack and especially Nick, I bet he loved telling him to 'be a good boy and run along' I can just imagine the look on his face as he told Nolan that.
I like the way you have shown Kelly becoming much less bombastic compared to previous chapters, she is aware that she has been caught. Someone as smart as Horatio was bound to figure out her involvement sooner or later. Another very good chapter, only two more left, will the case be wrapped up by then?

I really enjoyed the wistful way Kate recounted her relationship with Maria, how she found the younger woman a kindred spirit in a world that she knew she didn't belong in. So sad for her to find that Maria did not feel the same way and was in fact repulsed by her advances.
At least Kate has explained why her prints and cigarette case were found in Maria's car. I like the open-ended final paragraph of the chapter, Nick and the mayor on the warpath and gunning for Horatio, who will end up on top at the end of their confrontation. I can't wait to find out!

Oh my God, I really didn't see that one coming! I would never have thought of Maria and the mayor's wife being in a relationship. I kind of feel sorry for Kate, stuck in a loveless marriage whilst her heart belongs to someone she knows she can't have.
I liked the way you had Horatio and Frank almost play 'Good cop, bad cop' It seemed to work very effectively with Kate. What will happen now, will she be arrested for Maria's murder, committed in a crime of passion? Will her husband try and pull strings to get her off?
The story is continuing at a pace and I find myself getting very involved in the intricate plot, you are pulling this case off very well!

I like the thought of Alexx keeping in regular contact with Horatio as it was never really mentioned that much in the series, it's good to see that Alexx still cares deeply for him. They always had such a deep relationship and I'm glad that Horatio listens to her when it comes to Lauren, good on Alexx for telling him a few home truths!
I like that you covered the 'father' comment and how much it bothered Horatio, Alexx is right, it is his issue not Lauren's. I find myself wanting to smack Horatio for not answering the call when he saw it was Lauren, answer it you damn idiot!
I also enjoyed the way Horatio dealt with Delgado, there is nothing more infuriating than having a disagreement with someone and they react in such a cool and collected manner as you get more and more angry. Great chapter!

A nice chapter which in equal parts shows Horatio's soft and caring side with Dolores and the hardened interrogator who manages to get to the bottom of Chuck's involvement with Maria. I like his cold and clinical assessment of the other man although I can't help but feel he would have gone a little easier on him had he and Lauren nor had the mother of all rows the night before, a bear with a sore head doesn't seem like a suitable enough analogy! Great chapter xxx

Oh dear, could Chuck be the father of Maria's baby? If he is I certainly wasn't expecting that one!
Seems like Alexx picked the right time to call, she has a unique relationship with Horatio and if anyone can make him see sense it would be her.
Lauren is right to feel a little guilty, even though the way Horatio acted and spoke to her was out of line she needs to accept that she was partly to blame too. She had told Horatio that she didn't want company only for him to find a man he dislikes charming his way into her home to share a bottle of wine. Hopefully they will both swallow their pride and apologise to each other

Oh no, Horatio and Lauren's first real fight! *sob*
Somehow I knew this chapter was not going to end well, Horatio and his dislike of Nolan were obvious in this chapter and while I can understand his motivations and intentions I can't say I agree with his methods. His caveman routine is not going to do him any favours with a woman as strong as Lauren, I just hope that neither of them let their ego stand in the way of them apologising to each other. Great chapter!

Poor Lauren, that mayor really is a complete tool although I find it hard to argue with Horatio's assessment that she would be better off out of the firing line for the time being, having a personal relationship with a person on one side and a professional one with another person on the other us eventually going to lead to a big conflict of interest for her.
Interesting to see that Maria was pregnant, I wonder who the father is? Why do I get the feeling that Horatio is going to find that slimy snake Nolan at Lauren's home?

Oh no, you killed poor Maria!
I love Horatio's tenacity, the MDPD chief has given him orders to play nice with the Mayor and he completely ignores them and antagonises the man instead. I can see why though, the Mayor and Nick definitely seem a bit shifty, as if they are hiding something. Horatio and Frank will get to the bottom of this, Maria's death looks like it was no accident and they won't stop until they get to the truth. Great chapter!

I hope Lauren took the tux off of Horatio piece by piece as she promised him after they attended the gala! Nice descriptions of what both of them were wearing, i'm sure they both looked great! Horatio's dislike of Nolan and Mayor O'Reilly were very well written, he's usually a very good judge of character and I'm sure his suspicions of these two characters will not be unfounded.
It seems as though there is trouble afoot, what has happened to poor Maria and why do I get the feeling the Mayor might be involved in it?

Nice to introduce the children of the mayor, Kelly sounds like a nice girl and I really enjoyed how you described how much Jack cares for his children as this is a nice contrast between his public and private personas. There was quite a bit of emotion evident in Kelly's reaction when Lauren asks her about her mother and their emotionally distant relationship.
I can just imagine Horatio taking a stroll down the beach, it something that a lot of us authors seem to agree upon that it is something our man would do. It was lovely to read about how Horatio feels about Kyle and Lauren and how glad he is that they came into his life. I'm glad that Lauren knew exactly how to make Horatio relax, it would have done him no good at all to spend that evening on his own as you can just imaigine him fretting all night long and not taking care of himself. The last part also made me laugh, poor Horatio being dragged to the Gala, the things he does for love!

I really enjoyed the interaction between Horatio and Kyle in this chapter, it was never really covered that much in the series but you could tell in the later episodes that all Kyle wanted was to make his father proud of him. It always pained me to see the look on Horatio's face when he had to wave his son off to war again. Lauren is correct in her assessment that if he were to lose Kyle it would all but destroy what was left of Horatio. I also enjoyed Lauren's uncertainty at meeting Kyle for the first time as she wonders whether he will like her, if she makes his father happy I'm sure he won't have any issues with her!
The second half of the chapter was equally as good, you are doing a fine job of describing all the major players in the Mayor's team with enough detail to be able to imagine these original characters without going into too much detail that would detract from the flow of the story. The pacing of the chapter works very well, well done!

I liked the little flashback to Horatio's call to Lauren earlier in the day and the obvious dark tone to his voice, it was not the kind if news that he wanted to hear.
The description of Gatsby's sounds great, it's heartening to see that Horatio is being more open and honest about his feelings and his need to be close to Lauren. He feels guilty for wanting to hold her back and you know he would let her go to Tallahassee if that is what she really wanted to do.
I'm glad that they had a little 'clear the air' chat about the Mayor and Lauren's professional relationship with him. I know first hand how hard it can be to be close to someone yet not tolerate or understand some of the people they chose to spend time with be it personally or professionally. It can be very hard to put your own feelings to one side in order to support the person you love even if you feel that they are making a mistake.
A nice little mention of Kyle towards the end of the chapter, it was always clear to see in the series that Horatio hated the thought if his son being out on the frontline in Afghanistan and that he wold much rather have him back in the US, where he feels he could protect him no doubt.
