I never thought that Lupin was leaving just for the excitement. When I read the argument in the book, I got the feeling that Lupin was terrified of the consequences of his 'furry-little problem' on his unborn child. Even if his child won't be a werewolf, s/he'll have to deal with the prejudice against werewolves his/her entire life, since s/he's the son of one. In Lupin's panic, and because of his concern for the well-being of the trio (as you pointed out, Harry IS the son of his friends, and he would be an unofficial godfather had James and Lily not been killed), he wanted to help them, and get away from horror at the life he thinks he's condemned his child to living.

Basically, I think he's running away from his life because he's scared, not because he wants glory or excitement.

While I wish your version was the truth, I don't agree. In the book Remus wasn't looking for glory. He was scared. He was afraid he had infected a child, his child. He was reluctent to marry Tonks in the first place because mainly he was a werewolf. And then to know that he had created a child he freaked out. He thought if the child was infected it would hate him. But whether or not the baby was a werewolf and whether or not they won the war tonks and the baby would always be ostracized for having a werewolf for a father/husband. He thought by leaving them they would be better off. He was stupid for thinking that of course. Harry yelled at him in the hopes of getting Remus to return to his pregnant wife. The point is Remus wasn't seeking fame or glory he was running away, not that that is any better of course.

I always wanted Remus to have a bigger rule in Harry's life, but if he saw himself as Harry's father he would have been there for Harry instead of trusting Dumbledore and abandoning Harry. You would think being the only conection to his dead friends Remus would take care of Harry, but JK Rowling obviously didn't agree.

You wrote a wonderful story, keep up the great work.

Nice, it did bother me this arguement in the book, but then remus interaction with harry period in the book bothered me...especially from 5 onwards. he just seemed distant all the time

Firstly, I added this to my favorites not even 10 paragraphs in, just saying. Oo! This is odd, but I like this even more because you used the apostrophes properly for continuous paragraphs in one speech *author states at me* Just saying...I need to stop reading Fanfiction public, because I could not help all the 'aws' I let our while reading Remus' speech. See? This is how I imagined this argument! This is how I imagined how he felt towards Harry! *grabs author into hug* This has put my 'should have been like this' out there. Someone had to do it and I'm glad it was you :) thank you for sharing this with us grateful little readers

i think this is a much more believable argument than what happened in the actual book. i understand the argument in the deathly Hallows but it just didn't feel like it was the whole story. i love this and i just want to say i wouldn't object to you making this story 'insanely longer' as you so put it. it makes a great begging to a new version of the story and i just love it. well done! :)

Aww, I really like this! I didn't like the argument either and I like your take on it; Remus isn't running away from responsibility, he is simply taking care of another of his "children." I'd love if you would continue it and see what would have happened if Remus had been with the trio.

Great work!

I like it! Much better than in canon where he appears to be selfish, which never made sense to me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have *always* felt this way about Lupin. Lupin is my favourite adult character. I also have *always* felt that Harry was a bit of an oaf in how he dealt with Remus's offer to help him. Remus was simply being the best man he knew how to be, the best father, and he knew that he was the only one with a real option to try and be there for Harry.

You characterized everybody so genuinely. I wish that you could continue, but I can understand how it would wind up messing with canon and/or making the ending insanely long.

I have included Remus in my fics, and in my AU I have not killed him off. In fact, I made him as Harry's father-in-law, because I have wanted him to have more involvement in Harry's life. I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive Jo for killing Remus. /end rant

Anyway, thanks again for writing this. Anytime anybody argues with me about Remus for being a bad father, I'm showing them this fic and saying, "SEEEEEEE! It's all about perspective!"
