"You'll wait your turn," Said the nurse with the flaming colored lips.
"Yes, ma'am," I said. I felt like such a boy. My cheeks went up in flames. I might have been asked if I rubbed tomatoes on my cheeks because they were as red as her beautiful lips. Of course, the only reason why she spoke to me was because I was trying to help out Rafe. He's smart all right, he's just got some problem with letters.
"Next."
"Ehem. Hello Ma'am. My name's Danny Walker."
"Hello Danny. Now please read the bottom row, and then the top row."
After I read the letters I said goodbye and walked away. I wish I could have spoken to her more. She was beautiful, even more beautiful than a rose.
…..
"Evelyn? What are you thinking about?" Asked Betty.
"Well, you know that boy? The one I've been talking about? I wonder if I'll ever see him again."
"Of course you will honey!" Exclaimed all the girls in the train.
"Look, Ev, once we get off this train we are going to meet all the soldiers down there, and I can assure you he's there."
….
Everyone was dancing in the room and then I saw her sitting next to many more ladies. I suppose they were her friends. What were they doing here? Maybe it was their night off. I wanted to go and say hello, but she wouldn't remember me. No. She wouldn't.
"Oh, man! Look at Red over there with the ladies."
"Well, I'll tell ya something Rafe, he seems very interested in that blonde one."
"How about you Danny boy? Who's going to be the lucky lady?"
"Ehem… I don't know. I .. um"
" Oh, I know. It's the nurse who let me pass. Isn't it? I see her over there let's go meet her."
" No, no, uh, Rafe. There's no need, I mean she looks busy and all chatting with the ladies we wouldn't want to interrupt."
As soon as I said that all the boys turned to me and chanted "GO! GO! GO! GO!"
Then, all the nurses turned to see what the riot was about. Once again my face gave me away, and I looked across the room meeting her eyes.
…
"Well, lookie here. It seems to me as if your boy is here Ev!"
"Oh, he's not my boy Betty. Don't be silly. He probably doesn't remember me."
"How about we go and check." Betty turned to Red and told him to wait for her because they would be dancing all night.
..…
"Gentlemen," said Red's blonde friend as she approached me and Rafe in the middle of the room.
"Hello ladies, very nice ballroom isn't it?" Asked Rafe as I tried to look away from her red lips. I didn't even know her name yet, but she sure had my heart.
"Well, yes, it is a beautiful one. I'm Evelyn, and this is Betty. We've met before remember?"
"Well, I'm sure that my friend Danny remembers. Isn't that right Danny boy?"
I didn't know what to say to that. How could I not remember the most beautiful face I ever saw? After a moment of silence I asked her to dance. She seemed happy about it, and Rafe, well Rafe was surprised that I had the courage to ask. We danced all night and talked about the world and its wonders. We laughed and shared some drinks. While she told me about her stories as a nurse, I told her about mine as a pilot. Everyone had a good time that night. Red and Betty were in their own world. The other boys danced with different nurses, but they knew what limits they had. Rafe sat all night and talked to Sandra, one of Evelyn's friends. Many of the people on the dance floor started leaving with their respected dates, while Evelyn and I sat talking. I knew the night would have to end and we would leave the ballroom. Although, I was sure I had waited my turn. And now it was time to love again.
