4Six weeks had passed since Evelyn and I became one. We were in love and I knew it would last forever. Although our love would be separated soon.
"Evelyn, I volunteered to go to England and work with the Royal Air Force's Eagle. I know this was sudden, but I need you to know that I will come back for you. I promise."
"Danny," she said in between tears, " I promise I'll wait for you too. I love you Danny. I really do."
And with that I left my way to tell Rafe about me volunteering to go to England.

I found Rafe at the old café talking to Sandra. Over the past six weeks they fell in love with each other. I'm not going to lie. I was surprised, and not because he picked Sandra, but because he actually wanted to settle down with her. He asked her to marry him, and for that I envied him. I wanted the courage to ask Evelyn to marry me before leaving, but I was too nervous to do so.
"Rafe! Hey! Hello Sandra!."
"Hey buddy, pull up a chair and sit with us."
"No, listen I have to talk to you right now."
"Whoa, flyboy's getting serious. What's going on Danny?"
"I'm leaving to England. I volunteered to go there."
Rafe's face dropped and I saw the sadness come over his face and Sandra's face as well.
"But, Danny," Sandra said, "What about Evelyn? You can't leave!"
"Sandra, I promised her I would come back."
"Danny, it's real over there. It's dangerous." This was said by Rafe as he glared at me.
"I'm sorry. I promise you too, I will come back."
I knew that Rafe was disappointed since I was going to England and he was being transferred to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. I couldn't do anything about it. At least he would be close to Evelyn since the nurses were being transferred over there too.
3 weeks later:
"Evelyn, come on! You can't tell me you won't go say goodbye to Danny at the train station!" Sandra said as she prepared her suitcases for Hawaii.
"I can't go Sandra. Just saying goodbye to him breaks my heart in tiny pieces."
"Ev, come on now, we all know he's coming back! He promised."
My eyes filled with burning tears as I asked, "What if he doesn't Sandra? What if I never see him again?"
"Then go! GO! Go and say goodbye to the man that you love!"
I prepared myself and went to the train station as fast as I could, but when I got there I assumed it was too late. I only saw Rafe standing by himself. "Rafe! Is he here? Did he leave? I'm to late aren't I?"
" You're not" said a familiar voice. When I turned around I saw Danny kneeling down on one knee.
"Evelyn, I promise to come back and respect you and love you for the rest of my life. I promise to be yours forever if you'll promise to hold the key to my heart, will you marry me?" Danny said as I kneeled down in front of him.
My voice was shaking from the excitement, but I managed to say yes. After that we said our goodbyes and kissed for what seemed to be a long time. Danny got in the train and waved goodbye to Rafe and to me. Rafe gave me a hug and said, "Well it's about time! Welcome to the family girl!."
From that moment on I knew everything would be okay. At least, that's what I thought. A few weeks later we were transferred to Pearl Harbor for what seemed to be paradise. Little did I know that it would be hell.
