Piper sat next to Jason by the campfire and listened as the other campers told stories of all the things that had happened at the camp. The Argo II was almost finished and in honour to Cabin Nine they had decided to dedicate the campfire to them.
But Piper didn't really listen. Well, she made sure it looked like she listened, but really? She was very busy noticing that Jason had her arms around her and that he didn't do anything to prevent her from leaning on his shoulder. But when she was sure it was real, and not just another trick of the mist she turned her attention to Connor Stoll who told the story off when he and his brother made the grass on the Demeter Cabin's roof purple.
"-and when they realized..." He stopped talking and glared at his feet who now had plants surrounding them hard enough for him not being able to move. "By the gods Miranda, what have you done?"
Miranda Gardiner looked at him innocently," I haven't done anything."
Connor glared at his feet again and couldn't see Miranda who was grinning smugly. Her siblings started to smile too but when the green plants turned into a sickly shade of purple they stopped and the Hermes started laughing. Travis Stoll smiled innocently and took out a knife to rescue his brothers feet from the murderous plants, as he called them.
"Isn't it weird to know that you're practically related to everyone here?" Jason whispered in her ear, Piper absently nodded.
He said you're, he still didn't think he was a part of this camp. That he belonged at another place, Jason refused to tell her what he remembered but she knew that he had been telling Annabeth and Chiron bits and bits of his old life. She still wasn't sure what she thought of leaving to find the Roman Camp. What if someone like Annabeth was waiting for him there? What chance of having him would she have then? In fact, she was almost sure that there was a girl waiting for her. She had seen those pitying looks Annabeth shot her from time to time.
She needed to distract herself, she didn't want to fall in a hole of selfpity. No. She was strong, she was a Daughter of the Love godess and she couldn't have found it anymore ironical; she sucked at love. Jason had been her first boyfriend, and not even he was real. No, that was the mist. But here she was and Jason was having her arm around her and she was leaning on his shoulder.
"Honestly, this Percy dude sounds awesome," said Leo,"too bad he's not here." As if he just noticed he glanced at his fellow campers and seemed to notice the fire getting lower and lower. "Sooo, still a touchy subject?" As always, Leo seemed unable to be sad. But some campers nodded at him and the rest glanced at Annabeth curiously. She pretended not to notice it, but wasn't so good at it. She laughed shakily, "I suppose it is. But if you want to hear about him, I think you should. It might be a good idea for you to know some things about him."
Leo smiled and the rest of the campers mood seemed to lighten up, because the fire had rosen a little.
"Well, it should be good to have Grover here, since he was Percy's protector. But, they've told me about it." She took a deep breath and started, and Piper couldn't help but notice that Jason sat a little straighter. Probably excited to hear about his supposed counteract. "Well, after the world war two, who was basically a fight between the children of Hades and the children of Zeus and Poseidon, they swore on the river Styx that they wouldn't sire any more children. One reason was that their children are so much more powerful than the children of the other gods. But the main reason was the Great Prophecy."
"The first Great Prophecy," Rachel chimed in. Annabeth nodded.
"The first Great Prophecy. It said that a child of the eldest gods, that's them, would have the power to destroy Olympus. So they decided to not let the prophecy come true. But you'll hear more about it later. The years went and the gods kept their promise... for a while.
"Zeus cheated first, he had a daughter." She looked at Jason."Thalia."
"So she was basically illegal?" Leo asked. Annabeth nodded gravely, and Jason tensed. This was his sister, Piper reminded herself.
"Yeah. But anyways; she ran away from home at twelve, and ran into Luke. Who was fourteen." At the mention of Luke almost everyone, including Annabeth, seemed to sober up. Their faces were sad, betrayed, and maybe a little wistful. "They were both good at battling monsters, even without training, and after a while they found me. I was seven and scared and not nearly as good as them." She looked down at her hands, clearly founding difficulty with talking about it.
"You don't have to tell us, Annabeth," Piper said.
Annabeth looked at her," I'm fine," she said. She looked down at her hands again and continued. "After a while, Grover found us. He had orders to bring Thalia to camp safely and had no idea about us. We had difficulties on the way, the monsters caught up on us. The furies, sent from Hades himself had orders to kill her, and she ordered us to go on to safety. That's where she made her final stand. Zeus took pity, and turned her into a pine tree." She pointed to the tall pine at the top of the hill. Thalia was a tree? Piper wasn't sure if it was funny or not, but decided not to make a remark.
"Back to Percy, Poseidon also cheated. He fell in love with Sally, Percy's mum, and well, had Perseus. Which is his full name by the way. Everything went relatively okay for him until the end of sixth grade. They were at this museum for Greek and Roman archetypes and he had a run in with a fury. "
"When he was eleven?" Leo asked incredulously," And he lived?"
"Well, obviously, Fire Boy." A girl sitting next to Rachel said. Clare-something, daughter of Ares.
"He also beat Clarisse," said Will Solace. Well, Clare was close to Clarisse, at least. Clarisse glared at him, as if asking if he thought that he could too.
"Anyways... He vaporized the Kindly one, who he had thought was his math teacher, but Chiron, his latin teacher at the time, pulled the mist so the others in his class thought Mrs Dodd had never existed. Which confused Percy, since he was sure there had been a Mrs Dodds, the kindly one that is. But everyone else was convinced there hadn't been a Mrs Dodds, except Grover, who knew the truth and who really sucks at lying."
"We know," Connor said.
"Yeah, We've been trying to convince him to take lessons in three years now," Travis continued.
"Speaking of..."
"Where is Goat Boy?"
"Haven't seen him in a while."
Annabeth sighed," I don't know, he should be back soon. Probably before this camp fire will end, if you'll continue to interrupt me." She looked pointedly at the twins who found sudden interest in their shoes.
"Wait... goat boy? He's a satyr then?" Piper asked. Annabeth nodded impatiently.
" As I was saying, Percy was beginning to realize who he was. Because he saw through the mist. One time, he overheard Chiron and Grover talking about Mrs Dodds, A theft and the deadline at the solstice. And when the school ended, he was kicked out. For the sixth time in six schools." Some started chuckling, like they knew how bad his luck could be.
And Annabeth started talking about how he had seen the Fates snip a cord, seen his mother die right before he killed the minotaur, drowning Clarisse in toilet water, much to her dismay, and when he was claimed while playing Capture the flag.
Apparently, before Rachel was the Oracle, it used to be a mummy who you talked to before you went on a quest. Percy went there, on his quest to find Zeus's Lightning Bolt in the Underworld. And he had gotten his first prophecy there;
You shall go west, and face the god who has turned,
You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned,
You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend,
And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end.
After all he had been through, then saying that he wouldn't be able to save what mattered most in the end. It just didn't make sense to Piper. Who sends someone to retrieve something for them and then say that they would fail? Yeah, it must have been a great feeling. Percy's adventures continued; the three Furies; the slaying of Medusa; Percy jumping off the gateway arch into the Missisippi river; that his stepfather said he was a criminal on tv and the whole USA looking for him; Ares; The Lotus Casino and everything from the day they came back to that quest to the day he disappeared. His half-brother Tyson, how cute he was as a guinea pig... which everyone laughed at.
"Why do they laugh at him? Isn't he the leader?" Jason murmured to himself one time and Piper had to remind herself that in some ways he wasn't exactly like them. He had been at a camp where they valued discipline and loyalty.
Annabeth continued and was now at the part where everybody had been so shocked to see Thalia again that they had frozen and Percy had been the only one able to give her the nectar and ambrosia she needed. Then she told of Nico and Bianca DiAngelo and how she went missing. During that time there were a lot of holes but apparently he had spoken to Aphrodite about Annabeth, and when she told them she blushed, and that Bianca had died in 'the land without rain'. Then Percy had held up the sky and given Artemis the chance to battle Atlas and Zoƫ Nightshade became a picture in the sky. Then when they were at the council of the gods andthat they voted for Percy to live or not and Thalia becoming the lieutenant of Artemis's Hunters.
But nothing intrigued Piper more than the love story between her sister, Silena, and Leo's brother, Charles. Well, maybe the fact that Rachel nailed Kronos in the eye with a plastic hairbrush or the some-what happy ending when Percy and Annabeth finally became a couple, but still...
There had been a few interruptions there and there, holes where no one actually knew what had happened to Percy but when the camp fire was over; Piper was amazed.
Also, she thought it was good for Annabeth. She smiled now and then, and when she talked about Percy her eyes shone.
When Annabeth was done talking and they all were walking to their cabins, Piper wanted nothing more but being able to read Jason's mind. He'd seem so absent during the camp fire. Piper had laughed and smiled along with the other campers and then they seemed to remember that Percy wasn't there to laugh with them and they'd gone all sad again. But Jason had just stared at the ground, looking distressed. He probably was, but Piper wanted to know why.
Was it because of a girl, had he begun remembering even more. Did he feel that his feat over the Titan Krios was small next to Percy's over Kronos?
Later, when Piper laid on her bed in Cabin Ten she found herself wondering if all of this was possible or if it just was a dream. She'd spent sixteen years of her life thinking this stuff was impossible.
Atlas holding up the sky, she'd never believed that was true. But here was Annabeth, telling her it was and that both she and Percy had done it. Receiving a grey streak in their hair as proof.
She kept thinking like that and when she finally fell asleep, the picture with a boy with black hair, and seagreen eyes standing arm in arm with a smiling blonde girl with startling grey eyes plastered on her mind.
