6 Chapter 4

The next weekend, Haruhi organized one of her trademark 'let's search the city for ghosts and aliens and such' events, and as you may have guessed Martin was there. Nagato later claimed that Haruhi didn't mention him when she called, and he just decided to tag along for the hell of it.

Did he think something interesting was going to happen?

Haruhi didn't seem to question his decision to join, though to be honest she's barely acknowledged him since he joined. Come to think of it, I don't think she's heard him ramble yet. I'd love to see her reaction to that.

So as usual, we were split into two groups, which was now slightly easier with the addition of a sixth member, and as expected Haruhi and I were in separate groups. But there was something else I noticed, which I probably wouldn't have done if not for Martin.

Nagato and Asahina were never in the same group either. Koizumi often told me that Haruhi and I were in different groups because... Dammit, ever since Martin rephrased the explanation I haven't been able to think about it any other way.

Basically, Martin has this to say on why Haruhi and I are never in the same group, amongst other oddities.

"So Miss Suzumiya's like, 'HEY UNIVERSE DON'T TELL KYON I'M IN LOVE WITH HIM' and the universe is like 'OK I WON'T TELL KYON YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH HIM. HEY INHABITANTS OF THE UNIVERSE, HARUHI TOTALLY ISN'T IN LOVE WITH KYON'."

So what does it mean when Nagato and Asahina are constantly separate? Does Haruhi also think they should be together, or does Nagato tamper with the results because, as good as she is at hiding it, she's nervous around Asahina, or what?

Personally, I'm leaning towards the 'Martin was totally wrong about them both' theory. Or I'm trying to, anyway. If I think about those two together for too long I get... Distracted.

So where was I? Oh, that's right. The 'search'. Nagato, Martin and I were all in one group, so we all agreed to just hang out in the library for a while.

Martin was very quiet in the library, and I'm still debating with myself on whether or not I should be surprised by this. One one hand, he's Martin, and on the other hand, it's in a library. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object. And the unstoppable force decides to take a break before continuing to be unstoppable elsewhere. Fair enough.

Needless to say, we didn't find anything, and we came back to Haruhi's group empty handed.

Well, that's not entirely true. I was empty handed, but Martin and Nagato were both carrying piles of books that looked as though they were about to collapse at any moment.

I doubt one of them will be able to finish all the books they borrowed in time. No prizes for guessing which one.

A/N: Today we celebrate national "holy crap something totally happened in this chapter" day.
