2 Chapter 3

Yeah! Haven't done this in ages so I thought I'd update!

Chapter 3

Amy watched as Catherine's eyes snapped open. She sat bolt upright and Amy held her breath waiting for her friend to recognize her. But, as the Doctor had promised, she didn't. And so Amy kept playing her character, the same character she'd been playing for the past three days. She was the first lady in waiting, to Lady Catherine of Braganza. The past three days had been challenging, they'd replaced the real Catherine of Braganza with Cathy and had to convince Cathy that Amy had been her supervisor ever since she was very young. It was hard work, but Amy didn't mind. It was nice, to spend time with Cathy, even though sometimes she became confused.

'Good morning my lady…' Amy smiled gently, bustling over to Cathy and fluffing her pillows up so she could lean back on them.

'Amelia please… I believe we agreed you called me Catherine… If you have known me my entire life then you should treat me as an old friend, as you are to me…' she said it with a warm smile, but a hint of confusion glimmered in her eyes.

'Yes,' Amy challenged cheekily, 'and we also agreed you'd call me Amy, my lady!' she grinned standing up again as Cathy flopped back onto her pillows, her face now a complete picture of confusion.

She seemed to ignore Amy's comment and began talking quietly, 'I had another dream last night…' she said softly and Amy turned to look at her. The Doctor had asked her to recount all the time Cathy had "dreams", she'd had them every night since they'd brought her here.

'The same as normal?' Amy asked quietly.

'Yes… the same as the ones with the man, and the blue box, and the… running…' she said, her face distant, unfocused, there was a pause before she snapped out of it and got out of bed, her long night-dress trailed along the floor as she walked over to the window, as she sat down lightly on a chair and looked out across the extensive Spanish gardens Amy admired how well she just seemed to fit in with this environment, with this time period. She just, belonged.

'I think I should like to spend the day in the gardens, just, thinking… I like it out there, it's incredibly fragrant.' She said, gazing out.

'I'm afraid that's not possible, my lady.' Amy said, folding clothes and placing them in neat piles.

'And why not?' Catherine said, turning her head sharply.

'Because you're getting on a ship… You're going to England to meet your suitor, Charles the second, remember?' Amy reminded her, she had in fact reminded Catherine for the past few days.

'Oh yes!' Catherine sighed, standing up and walking over to Amy, picking up a dress and folding it quickly before throwing it down dramatically. 'Because I am supposed to fall in love with this brilliant young suitor and live eternally happily ever after and unite the two kingdoms of Britain and Portugal for the greater good! At least that's how father puts it…' she sighed again and fell backwards onto the bed.

'Sometimes, I wish that my dreams could come true Amy, that a mad-man in a box could come and take me away, away from being a princess, away from all the tight corsets and potential suitors…' she gazed up at the roof of her four-poster bed.

Amy smiled, 'You called me Amy!'

Catherine realized and grinned herself, 'Oh all right then! Amy it is, but then no more of this "my lady" business. It's Catherine.' She used her body to propel herself into a sitting position.

'Alright then,' Amy smiled, 'now, what do you plan on wearing today?'

'Oh I don't know, nor do I particularly care. Whatever's comfiest for travelling…?' Catherine replied with a casual flick of the hand, before her eyes widened suddenly… 'Amy, tell me you're coming too…'

'Of course I am! You didn't think I'd leave you all alone in a foreign country did you?' Amy laughed casually.

Catherine breathed a sigh of relief, 'thank goodness, I don't think I would have been able to bear it if I were to be forced to remain in England alone… I really don't think it's fair that papa is making me do this… I've never met this, Charles! I don't know whether I am in love with him, I don't even know if I like him!' Catherine said slumping.

'Sit up properly! Like a proper lady!' Amy grinned cheekily, glancing up from her folding clothes. Catherine sat bolt upright again but a frown played on her lips.

'Amy… why do I HAVE to do this?' she asked slowly.

'Because it will please your father, it will save your country and it will be a stable future for you…' Amy said, bringing together any tiny detail that she'd learned in history class.

'But why do I not get a say in it?' she asked sulkily.

'Because you're not old enough to decide what is good for you…' Amy replied.

Catherine got up again and walked back over to the window, Amy watched her, her night-gown seemed to glow a brilliant white in the sunlight and she wondered how long it would be before her friend would remember her.
