Prologue
He walked through the abandoned neighborhood at night, gun in one hand, beer bottle in the other. Although he was drunk he felt like he was in control. He walked past the old music store, which had many broken windows. He shot a bullet through the cracked glass just to prove that he could. He grinned a lopsided grin.
"Hey you. You get over here," said someone in the shadows called. He kept walking.
"I'm talking to you," the person called. The man stepped out of the shadows, revealing a blue uniform. A cop. Shoot.
"You're in a lotta trouble for that," he said. "Do you think you can just walk through here, shoot a window, and walk away? Not on my watch, you can't." the cop said, pushing the butt of his gun into the man's chest.
The man growled, and, slowly, pulled his gun from his pocket.
"Buddy, we can do this the easy way or the hard way, your choice," the cop said, eyeing the man up and down.
As a response, the man lifted his gun to the cop's chest.
He sighed. "Guess it's the hard way," he said, but he was dead before he lifted his gun.
The man stared at the gun, then the cop, and then back at the gun. He had never shot something like that. Sure, he had shot at windows, stray animals, even once at his daughter's tea set, but never a human. He probably would have stood there all night, if the alarm hadn't suddenly sounded.
At that sound, he bolted. Jumped in the cop car, and drove away as fast as he could.
Ten minutes later, around 12:45 AM, he arrived back at his house. He jammed his key in the lock and ran into the living room.
His wife was watching TV on the couch. She was holding a cup of coffee and had bags under her eyes. When he opened the door, she jumped up and hugged him.
"William Charles White! Where have you been? Livy wanted you to read her a bedtime story!" she said accusingly.
Livy. Only his daughter's name kept him from going insane. But his wife wasn't done yet.
"Oh Billy, we can't keep control of you, can we? What is this, beer? Billy, were you drinking again? And what is this red stuff? Billy is that blood?" she asked incredulously.
He backed away from her, heading for his daughter's room.
"You are not going in a room with Livy covered in blood!" she said hysterically. "How do we know it isn't someone else's?"
"Jane, you need to calm down," he said, trying to soothe her, also trying to get to his daughter's room.
"I will not calm down, not when you have blood on your shirt, and, BILLY! IS THAT A GUN?"
He closed his eyes and gritted his teeth.
"Crap," he said. He would've said worse, but then he noticed a little blonde head come around the corner.
"Mommy? Daddy? What are you doing?" asked his 6-year-old daughter, staring at him quizzically.
"Nothing Livy, go back to bed." said Jane, motioning for her daughter to leave.
"But Mr. Fluffy and I want to know why you are yelling," she said, and made her teddy bear wave.
"Livy, just go to bed," Billy said.
"But we just wanted to-"
"OLIVIA ANN WHITE! GO TO BED!"
He regretted yelling as soon as he saw her eyes fill up with tears. She ran from the room sobbing.
"WILLIAM CHARLES WHITE! HOW DARE YOU TALK TO MY DAUGHTER LIKE THAT?" Jane shouted. That blew him over the top.
"YOUR DAUGHTER?" he roared. "LAST TIME I CHECKED, SHE WAS MY DAUGHTER TO!"
"NOT ANYMORE! YOU CAN'T BE TRUSTED ANYMORE! YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE AT 7 AM AND DON'T GET BACK TILL MIDNIGHT COVERED IN BOOZE AND BLOOD! YOU, YOU, YOU JUST, AARGH! GET OUT!"
Billy was stunned. Did she really just say that?
"DID YOU JUST TELL ME TO GET OUT?" he demanded.
"YES I DID!" she retorted.
Billy had so much anger; he didn't know what to do. He screeched and before he knew it, he heard a gunshot, and Jane was on the floor.
Livy ran down the stairs.
"Daddy what was that noise?" she asked, and her innocent face destroyed him. He shot her, she fell and he broke. He called the police on himself, and then hung up. 10 minutes later they showed up.
"William Charles White, you are charged with murdering two people and attempted murder of one person." said the officer.
That night, Olivia White was admitted to Philadelphia Community Hospital, and was discharged two weeks later, after having surgery. She then moved halfway across the country to her Grandmother's house in Mesa, Arizona, bringing only 6 outfits, her teddy bear, and her brand new kitten, Nancy.
