I personally think the best way to improve a forum is to get a discussion going, which is related to the mother site. So on that note, I think i would like to know a few things to further my writing experience.
1) What makes you get into a book? When sort of beginning catches your attention?
2) What causes you to actually 'feel' for characters, or relate to them in a humanistic way?
3) What makes certain parts in a book 'tense' for you?
1.Well, if it's a book/character/plot about something I already know about, then I'd say a beginning that befits whatever series/character/plot it is based off of.
If it's a new book/character/plot, I'd ask what Genres, and what the overall tone of the book is about/the character is involved/A summary of the plot- then I could answer the question properly.
2. See #1
For new characters, it is important to drive home their characters attitude and generally see their variety of responses to situations:
- Going about town
- Talking with loved ones
- Fighting/Conflict

If you've done the previous work properly, the experiences- be it negative or positive - should make the build-up to those points tense for either positive or negative reasons.
What i find the best way to get people interested is by showing you've put a lot of thought and work into the first chapter. I've personally have started to read over five thousand fics on this site and over one hundred books(books are expensive so imostly read from this site) so if i know one thing its how a poorly written chapter ruins the whole story. As you describe a character, his/her feelings, or actions people will naturally relate to the charactor because basic pschology states that everyone can relate to everyone else if they took the time to understand them. So the most important thing is to make people enjoy reading your chapters by spacing between paragraghs, few spelling errors, easy to understand story flow, and above all else details many details. The best thing to remeber is after you write a chapter wait one day, then read twice before you post it trust me we would rather wait for a good chapter than suffer through a bad one
All and all that does seem right, you can't forget about character development and a well thought out plot.
