Are the off the wall couplings your types? AKA, not canon couplings (Troy/Gabriella; Chad/Taylor; Kelsi/Jason; Zeke/Sharpay). Or are you a traditional person. Well, you can discuss it here!

Can I say something about the rules? (It's nothing bad.) But saying that you don't like Troy/Gabriella because they are too Mary-Sueish is giving a reason for your dislike of the couple, but you aren't bashing the authors of those fics.
Well here's my answer:
I like "off-the-wall" couples better. Ryella, Rypay, Tryan, Chadpay are some of the ones that I like. I HAVE read some good canon couples though - there's some good Troyellas and Chaylors out there. It's just that the majority of those seem to be sickeningly-sweet fics that are all fluff and no plot. I don't like Troyella because, as it said in your example, they DO seem to Mary-Sueish to me. Gabriella has the most minimal flaws, and Troy doesn't have ANY, in my opinion. It's GREAT if an author can do that, but I haven't seen many Troyella stories with depth. There are a few though. *shrugs* I'll just stick to my different pairings. Except for those few canon-couple stories that are done well.

I love strange pairings too, I think they're a blast.
I do have a c2 full of them, like pretty rare ones, some femslash, a Jason/Ryan, and Troy/Taylor to name a few so everyone who's interested in them should definately check it out, there are so many good authors who write that are in there.
10/18/2006 #4 ReportYou know its funny, I'm usually a firm canon supporter, most of my pairings are canon, example,
Harry Potter (Ron/Hermione)
Gilmore Girls (Luke/Lorelai, Rory/Jess....although this one may or may not be counted as canon anymore. Lol.)
Everwood (Bright/Hannah, Amy/Ephram)
Dawsons Creek (Pacey/Joey)
And so on and so forth. But HSM is the only fandom that I'm willing to go beyond Troyella and see what else is out there, and I gotta say, I love what else is out there. I'm definitely into the Ryellas and Troypays, and I've read a few Tryans and I love the ones that I've read. I havent read any Troyellas, but its not because I absolutely hate the pairing, its just that most of the stories on this site seem to host a lot of similiar fics especially when it comes to that pairing, so I just stear clear of that pairing all together on ff.n for the most part. If I see a story I find interesting I wont bash it or forget about it, most likely I'll read it, but I havent come across a Troyella story worth reading. And this isnt to bash any of the Troyella writers out there by the way, I'm sure you guys are great, but I'm kind of picky with what I read. Lol.
Anyway, I love Ryellas and Troypays because it may not be canon, but it makes sense and it works so poor Ryan isnt left in the dust. *tears* But thats just me.
Hopefully some of this made sense. Lol.

I never, well almost never I do SHIP one cannon couple, SHIP some cannon. I hate cannon. It's all so predictable, in the norm, great American box ideas. If you read my profile, you'll see. I can't stand cannon couples. Harry Potter, which I haven't read any in a year, I like Harry Hermione because it will never happen, Remus and Hermione, etc. Code Lyoko: no one (but the cool people) likes Jeremie and Yumi or Ulirch and Aelita. RobRae (which sparks a whole new debate.) Thanks to all of you who like to go outside the box. You are cool people.

I really agree with the 'most of the same plotline' thing. I have no clue why HSM is any different to me, but it is. Like I've mentioned to many people, we really can't help what we like and dislike. It's just... who we are.
Anyway, back to what I was saying... I'm pretty open when it comes to most pairings. I like Troyella, but I do read Ryella and Trelsi. I even wrote a Trelsi one time... Didn't turn out too well, so it wasn't posted, but I did enjoy writing it.
Then there's another catagory I write in, which is fun not to write about pairings for once (gotta love that). It's *drumroll* The marching band catagory! Teehee. I write pure humor stuff when it comes to that. Since HSM fics are beginning to go downhill, at least I have one fun catagory to turn to.
Anyway, I'm done =D

Like, I recently discovered Troy/Taylor...that pairing intrigues me. I wrote a kind of Troy/Taylor fic, but I have a few more in the works. I also like Ryella, Trelsi, Chad/Gabriella...

1/9/2007 #9 ReportI use to only just read the normal pairings[troyella, chaylor, zekepay] but now Troyellas are getting really annoying. Ive like started to hate stories the only have them. I mean sure there are some good ones but there are very few. Ive found some off the wall pairing that i have come to love a lot like Relsi and zaylor. well yea thats about it for now.

Yet, I've written basically everything from, TroyxOFC to a one sided JackxTroy.
I just don't see the appeal with things like Troyella & Chaylor (although, I find
Chad & Taylor way easier to bear than Gabriella & Troy;; she's just to sweet for me.)
There are a couple of fics I've read where Gabriella and Troy are together that I have
actually enjoyed...but, a lot of them are way too cookie cutter perfect for my liking.
(NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE WHO WRITES/READS THEM I'M NOT JUDGING, THIS IS JUST MY OPINION)

Maybe I just like being different, but I find it way easier to write
Troy with Chad or Jason...I've even done a TroyxZeke (in terms of slash)
than with Ryan;; maybe it's just the worry of being a cliche in that regards
because there are so many Tryans out there to compete with;; but writing
a TroyxJason (Or Chad, or Zeke) gives you the opportunity to be completely
original with whatever you do...erh, unless someone else has already used
your idea -- then it's BBBBBBAAAAADDD...(so don't use it;; it stinks when
someone steals your ideas.)
Yeahh;; so those are my thoughts on the matter...
I do intend to shut up with my meaningless ramblings now

But it probably wouldn't include any other characters. I don't like the character influence. Like, I could probably read a Troypay, but with no Ryan or Gabriella even mentioned. Sadly, those are hard to come across.
I just tend to stay away from HP forums.. Those people can get really personal. It's dumb, in my opinion. It's not like anything they say can change the other's opinion on thier favorite pairing.
And as for Gabriella being Mary-sueish, I have to agree. But thankfully, Disney never gives much background on their characters. That leaves plenty of room to write in. And that's the beauty of fanfiction. You can add that depth; you can ultamently do anything you want.

Man, those get so personal. There are so many flaming wars, especially people fighting about Hermione/Harry or Hermione/Harry. Ginny/Harry gets a lot of bashing as well.
I have tried to read different pairings, when I actually do read HSM fics. I'm not so hateful of Troyella, though it still isn't really my favorite pairing. Yet two of my three fics that I am actually planning on finishing are Troyella. Hmm. I like Ryella better though, and am starting to get into m/m slash.
But thankfully, Disney never gives much background on their characters. That leaves plenty of room to write in. And that's the beauty of fanfiction
When I read good fanfics, that's exactly what the authors do, and it's exactly why I like those fics.

However, I'm a big Chadpay fan... there aren't that many of us here on FFN, but I think they're great together. I also like Ryelsi (uh, is that how you say it?) and Zaylor, which is practically nonexistent. So yeah... Troy&Gabriella, Chad&Sharpay, Ryan&Kelsi, and Zeke&Taylor. I guess the pairings I like are kind of different, except for Troyella, of course. =)

I try to stay away from specific pairing forums because the people there are like: OMG WHY DID YOU COME HERE IF YOU LIKE THIS TOtALLY SUE PAIRING THAT EVERYBODY HATES?
I hate them. Ocasionally i'll check into a Jelsi one, or a ryan Oc, but I prefer C2s. I get exactly what I want...:D
I think Troyella is way to sue-ish. Troy, basketball player, smart, and a singing talent. Gabriella-No father that we know of, probably left trying to earn sympathy for Gabriella, and then theres her two second stage fright. Honsetly, I'm scared up until my first line, she looked scared but jumped right into the song. I hate her, her new name is Sue. Mary-Sue.
5/26/2007 #17 ReportThe thing I found really annoying about Gabriella's stage fright was it wasnt even timed properly. It wasnt her line and they pointed the camera at her like she was going to open her mouth to sing. I like Vanessa Hudgens, I think she has a beautiful voice for someone in her stage of her career, but her character Gabriella is a total sue, I have to agree. I dont blame Zac and Vanessa for not wanting anything to do with HSM anymore, although I think they should at least be a little bit grateful because it kicked off their careers in a big way.
5/26/2007 #18 ReportOff the walls are great. Love em to death. My current fanfic isn't really off the wall, more canon Troy/Ry-ella [alternating sorta] but I'm a sucker for a well written off the wall, such as:
trelsi-troy x kelsi
rylor-ryan x taylor
chadpay-chad x sharpay
you know...well i haven't really seen any of these pairings, but there are a few super off the wall pairings that are also written well. it's just hard finding them in the typical plotlines with the typical characters.

9/2/2007 #20 ReportMy latest favorite/muse is Jason/Gabriella. I've got one or two of those half-written on my computer, and I hope they get finished soon, but I'm not making promises. Something about that couple just really intrigues me.
I am officially NOT a fan of Ryelsi though. Or Jason/Martha. The 3rd movie made me so angry. Then again, I'm probably the biggest Jelsi-shipper there is. =)
3/1/2009 #23 ReportAs for the canon, they do the jobs the were created to do. Chaylor always offers a safe and straight love-hate relationship. Troyella in the fanfiction universe is rarely done well. It has potential to be a great story about two different people who get along great but occasionally have problems. Some one mentioned them believing Troy had "No defects", but if one looks closely at the second movie and the third he has a major character flaw: The want to make everyone happy when you clearly can't. Now when it comes to Zeke/Sharpay, It is one of few details and just a lot of possibilities and question just like all the other couples. Jelsi/Relsi and just put in for some extra details.
This isn't to promote canon because the non-canon is far much better. Only because that less people are brave enough to venture into ideas that aren't already beat to death. I personally would rather read a Trelsi, Rylor or a Chadella than a canon story that has forty-seven similar stories. They more original and usually have a deeper quality that the cookie cutters that end up happening. The slash that is made also is a lot better. Just to clarify The canon serves a purpose it just isn’t portrayed well by the fanfiction community and that is why it doesn’t have a high rank to the readers.
to allow "Off the wall couplings". It's not solely for the fact that they give a wide range of similar but different teenagers at the same school and could easily go either way but also the scarcity and/or total lack of concrete preferences and relationships in the actually shows. 7/18/2009 #24 ReportI love Off the Wall pairings for HSM! I actually like them more than the canon pairings. The only HSM canon pairing that I really ship would be Zekepay. I think Chaylor has no chemistry really, Troyella is decent I guess, but I wouldn't want to read it, and Ryelsi seems to be gripping at straws a bit. (Sorry if any of that it your OTP, but that's just what I think).
My OTP is Chyan. Chad and Ryan are the best. That baseball scene, blows me away. I seriously think that's one of the best scenes in all of HSM, and 'I don't dance' is my favorite song. It makes Chyan almost canon....but some could consider its Off-The-Wall, I don't think it is. However there are many things I like reading that is Off-The Wall:
I like reading Chadpay because those two are Fire and Ice! They have the perfect Love/Hate relationship!
I also really love Traylor (Troy/Taylor). They are seriously under-rated, and to be honest I think they are the two most moderate people of the group. Like Chad and Sharpay are loud and confident and cocky. Ryan is more subdued and willing to follow Sharpay's lead. Gabriella is sweet and a bit shy. While Taylor and Troy aren't overly out there, however they aren't as lowkey as Ryan or Gabriella. Also that Troy head poster that Taylor would make anyone wonder... Taypay or Shaylor (Sharpay/Taylor) the love/hate to the max again! And Taylor practically stalking Sharpay all through HSM2 3 They are also so Joanne/Maureen! Zyan (Zeke/Ryan) Zeke anyone makes me interested. He's so sweet and perfect! And Ryan deserves someone awesome. Zelsi (Zeke/Kelsi) Tall person/Small person...PERFECTION! I have yet to read one yet, but I'd love to read it! Jaylor (Jason/Taylor) Can you imagine!?! I've never read it, but I think it would be awesome. I could see Taylor getting impatient and blowing up at him, and after her rant Jasons ays something totally random, and she facepalms, and is like I could never stay mad at you 3
