Very annoying

The Battling Bard

It happens a lot on this site. Every great friendship is twisted to slash; Turin and Beleg, Fingon and Maedhros, Elrond and Gil-Galad, Aragorn and Legolas, Frodo and Sam... The list goes on. But yes, it is very annoying, especially seeing as they blatantly are not gay, hello, Sam married Rosie! Poor Tolkien must be rolling in his grave.

Really, people are entitled to their opinions of characters in books, but if they think that Sam and Frodo are gay, then they and any of their companions must be homosexually oriented. I mean, OBVIOUSLY, if you're good friends with someone, you must want to have a romantic relationship with them! -_- That was complete sarcasm, but honestly, it must be the way people think sometimes. But hey! It's fanfic, ya know? Let their minds wander. At least some people TRY and stick to the truth and ATTEMPT to follow the path that the wonderful authors of great books may have approved of. Others . . . don't. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Absolutely agree. What would be the point of re-writing Tolkien?

Okay heres what I got to say so please don't be mad. I know there not gay in the book, but in the movie they have totally gay parts. If you listen you'll here them. I personally don't like when people write em gay, but what are they supose to think if the have only seen the movie and not read the bookl? i know this is going to make so people mad but hey, it must be said.

It all depends on your interpretation of scenes in the movie. Though I agree, in ROTK, at the wedding, it's kinda pretty much EXTREMELY OBVIOUS that Sam, for one, is not gay. And after the Gray Havens, the closing scene, with the little kids - one of which btw was Sean Astin's daughter - Sam is not gay. Do I need to rant any more?

I don't mind people writing slash (I read alot of it), but just as long as they don't fool themsleves and think that the characters are actually gay. I think it's just that people don't understand the relationship and it makes people uncomfortable so they have to label it as something else. in otherwords, homosexuality.

I haven't met one person who saw the film and thought the characters must be gay. People on this site are just weird. On the subject of slash, whenever I mention it to a normal person I am greeted with the same bemused expression followed by 'What kind of weird sites are you visiting?'. Try it with your normal friends/family.

Ok I don't think there gay but there are parts in the movie that make me burst out laughing about how mushey they are. I think it's funny but don't, I'll repeat, dont think there gay. Maybe bi though in Sams case. ( thats a joke!)

Just have a litle insite and a question.

I don't think any of them are gay. They are the more touchy feely groub and I see nothing wrong with that. I mean when someone you care about is in major pain you want to reach out and tell 'em it's goin' be okay. And in some cases all you can do you touch their shoulder or hand and just be there for 'em. What mushy parts are you talking about? just curious.

Sam and Frodo are not . Merry and Pip are another story entirely, but I won't go into that here. Frodo, Sam, Leggy, and Aragorn and everybody are all very secure in their masculintiy. Sam and Frodo just have such a close friendship that some people think they're . It's just mushy, not . But I don't mind fanfiction unless the person thinks that they are suposed to be . The SF SLASH isn't that bad really. Just not true.

I agree that Frodo and Sam are not gay. People read the word "love" and they automatically think "homosexual." I think that modern-day society declared that when the word "love" is used pertaining to two males, it cannot be a platonic, brotherly friendship, but must be a gay couple. They are totally wrong on this.

They just twist these wonderful friendships to slash simply because of all this publicity of homosexuality and they say, "Well, why not campaign for homosexuality on fanfics!?" Stupid idea. I really hate slash. Tolkien, if he saw these fanfics, will kill. Seriously kill. That's why it's called slash. Authors just want to kill that relationship (unless it's Brokeback Mountain. Why not let those fanfic writers just write about Brokeback Mountain where slash is the norm?)

I totally agree! It drives me crazy when people at school whisper around that Frodo and Sam, or the people who play them, are gay! Our world is so twisted that people automatically assume any close relationship has to be romantic. Urg!!!!!!

I know what your saying and I totally agree! This world is so disusting I can hardley stand it! Why are our people like that? I don't understand! I mean just because alot of people live like that dosen't mean we are all like that! I mean for Pity's Sake!

I mean, really, Sam talks throughout the entire series about how he's in love with Rosie. Then he marries Rosie. And has kids. So duh, he's obviously not gay.

And then Merry and Pippin both got married, too, do I don't see why people think they're gay. They're flippin' COUSINS, fer cryin' out loud!!!

well, about re-writting tolkien (YES! I SPLET IT RIGHT!) I think every author wants to prefect their story to the bone (jut read how many times Tolkien re-edit's his story!) So re-writting isn't that bad, it's just how you rewrite it!

Great topic. :0) Have you seen the TBS commercials for LOTR? If not, watch on Youtube.com. Very funny.

One of the commercials makes it look like Frodo and Sam are lovers. Of course it's meant to be funny.

I really don't get why people try to make straight characters gay. Personally, If you're gay you're gay, if you're straight you're straight. The only time it weirds me out is when they take a straight character and make him gay or vice versa. Not sure what that says about me but who cares.

I absolutely HATE when people make the elves (of all characters) have sex orgies or sleep with many people, or, depending on the character, gay. I doubt Tolkien's intention was to put the gay spin on anything, especially since it wasn't as accepted back then.

All in all, i doubt the characters were supposed to be gay, therefore, people should stop writing slash ff. But that's just my opinion.
