Yeah, seen those commercials, and I agree that there is a big difference between them and slash writing.
I have not seen them. But you are right about not writing slash.
the people who say they are gay obviously haven't watched the movie seeing as how Sam has a crush on this hobbit woman and later marries her and has kids.
ummm I don't think I wanna know what that is!? Do I? But it sounds really gross. I hate to say it but I have problems with people like that! I try not too but....It is so gross!!!
Please.
See my post on the last forum. I don't feel like getting mad all over again.
agh!
let me tell you my opinion.
okay, so...
lately my family has been breaking apart.
as in, we don't get along and don't talk to each other at ALL.
so my mom goes out to CVS on thursday and brings back all of the lord of the ring DVDs, which is, i suppose, an attempt to have a family night sorta thing.
i've heard a lot about it. so i'm like... "uh, okay, whatever, maybe i'll watch it later."
so later i ask "anyone wanna watch with me?" and of course no one does.
so i call up my boyfriend and we start watching, and of course he's seen them all but he won't tell me anything [not that i want to know, i like surprises]
but at the parts that some could supposedly twist into being gay, he of course is all "GAY!"
and i smack him on the head. .
THEY ARE NOT GAY.
that would be... wrong!
so yeah. i'm obsessed with all the LOTR movies and pippin in particular, as well as aragorn.
and i bought all the books, plus the hobbit.
I think it's sad how people nowadays assume that a friendship such as Frodo and Sam's has to be sexual. They do not understand that certain types of love do not have to be physical at all.
Exactly. In fact I think it would be more accurate not to call it love but companionship. Or even (forgive me for this) fellowship
I love that! I agree. Spg, there is nothing to forgive. U are absoluttely right, Mellon nin.
Personally, I think people who think really close friends are gay are just have nothing better to do with their miserable lives. (Not litterally gay, just stupid. Apologies if I caused any offense.)
I also don't like slash. I'm thinking of writing a spin-off of crazyroninchic's Never Leave Fanfiction Lying Around called Never Leave Slash Lying Around.
Sam and Frodo are NOT gay. I think that hobbits are naturally touchy-feely people. plus they are really good friends. Lets not overlook the fact that Sam MARRIED Rosie, who is FEMALE and has several kids.
Ignore the ignorant. They are either stupid or uninformed (which would explain their ignorance.........)
Dare I add another "Amen"?
And to anyone who implied Merry and Pippin were gay...
Go read "Peter Rabbit". Anything beyond that is rather too complex for you.
To be honest, I think it's stupid that some people think that two people of the same sex who are close are automatically 'gay'. Tolkien wanted to show the strength of friendship, not homosexuality in his writings. (Wow, that sounded quite intellectual :L) It makes me annoyed when (and I take my friend as an example) people who have never read the books watch the movies then go - "Oh my god. They are so gay." Aha that was bit of a rant. I hope it makes sense to everyone else. :)
I think it's because men used to get along differently. Now a days they have to act all tough and everything. If you read some books during the 1900's or before most act friendlier.
Indeed. I think it's sad. It's like, when my friends and I watch the movies, they're nearly all like - "Sam and Frodo are obviously gay." It annoys me, because it's pretty clear that Sam loves Rosie Cotton, and I don't think you could go through something like that without becoming really close friends with the person you were with. However, seeing as most of them are too ignorant to read the books......... it can only be expected i suppose.
Lady of Dark is absolutely right. And there are many good points in this thread. The people in the story are secure about who they are as well as their sexuality. There are so many levels and kinds of love that we are all capable of. I try to understand others points of view. Afterall, this IS fiction and fantasy. So since I'm not interested in slash, I just don't read and let others be.
*runs around screaming with delight* I actually found anti-slash writers!!! *hugs all of you* Anyway, past that. I could go into a long-winded rant about how incredibly disgusting slash is (I've never read any, but sometimes just the synopsis' of the stories scar me badly as it is.), but since you all agree, I guess it'd just be a waste of breath. I'm also a Christian, so that makes slash five billion times even more terrible to me than some.
Anyway, I have to disagree with some of you and say that Frodo and Sam never show the slightest inclinations of being gay in the movies. They are true friends, brothers practically, by heart. Hobbits, and sheltered, are naturally more physical than men nowadays who think that even a hug is disgusting. People in general are meant to wish for physical attention, and I don't mean romantically. We need a someone to comfort us when things go wrong, hold our hands and aid us.
In the movies, especially near the end of RotK, when Frodo is at the verge of losing his mind to Sauron, Sam takes on a more parental, elder brother type of relationship with Frodo. He comforts, protects, and loves just as my some of my friends do to me when I'm having a rough time. No one's ever called them gay. They're just great friends lending a hand.
Having such trash like slash online is a disgrace to each of our countries. As a U.S. citizen, I am disgusted by the legalization of same marriage in many states. It is perverted and goes against the very laws of nature, not to mention the Word of God. People rant about their liberties taken away? The right of free will and choice? When will it be taken too far? People can't do every little thing they want. It just doesn't work. In a world of total freedom of choice, there would be chaos. Soon we'll see becoming legal. Why? Because it was the person's freewill choice to kill the other. Certainly they have the right to choose such a thing? WRONG!!! This world is morally degrading with America leading the charge. It's hard to believe the U.S. was an upright, Biblical nation at one point.
How can they let gays have their way with 'freedom of choice' and make prayer in schools illegal? Certainly the Christian students have the 'freedom of choice' to pray if they wish? After all, some schools have cross dressing days and toss Easter out the window. If anyone ever takes the time to notice, they will realize that the moral and religious freedoms are being slyly but steadily stripped from this world and replaced by laws encouraging immorality. It's happening before our eyes, and we sit back and do nothing!
*sighs* I apologize. I said I wouldn't rant and there I go, off the true subject as well. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent some of my frustrations. Repeat: Frodo and Sam are not gay, weren't gay, and never will be gay. Don't even get me started on all the other sick pairings. *shudders*
Blessings! ~Ila
I hate slash. I hate it to eternity and back again. Which is why i got really mad when my best friend, who I thought was intelligent enough to know otherwise, said something about LotR people being gay. ARRRGGHH!
One of the main things I don't get about slash is that it's normally teenage girls writing it? Why would you do that? Why?
And aha, my friends have wised up now; they know it makes me cross. :L
actually i saw the movies an instently thought that frodo and sam were partially, you know, together, as well as pippen and merry... but in the end it didn't make sense and i back tracted on that one... i guess society doesn't think that guys can get that close, like they can't be so deeply and emotionally connected without having some kind of alterior feelings... it's the same reason people cant help but make harry ron slash for hp... i'm a big believer in one true love thing, so when sam got married i was all in a huff about it and kept telling myself that i obviously had it wrong the entire time if that was the out come... but legolas aragorn slash?!?! there is no way in the 13 levels of hell... i'm not against slash at all, i just think that it has to make sense. and totally changing the plot of the original is ok...
