A Rose Zemlya

Unfortunately, in much the same way as I can't/won't commit to an update schedule for the story, I can't/won't commit to an update schedule here. :) You can assume that unless I've said otherwise, I'm working on the story when I can find simultaneous chunks of time, energy and inspiration, but I won't be posting updates on progress unless I have a decent amount of progress to update you on.

As far as my professional/personal lives, they're going as well as they ever do. :) Little good, little bad, never a dull moment (unfortunately, LoL). What precious leisure time I have is split between playing WoW, reading books, writing LoZ:Rec, writing on any one of my originals (currently active: The Man Named Justice), writing inconsistently for a blog or two, and general hanging out with friends. Oh and day dreaming on any given story I've been reading/writing (for instance, some events later on in LoZ:Rec are coming together nicely – just need to get through the word count between here and there ^^).

I'm glad you enjoyed the writing process snippet. :) If I get another good snippet to do a break down of I will. ^^

In the meantime, here's a non-broken-down snippet from some of the most recent stuff I've added. As a rough-estimate, I'm about half-way through the Chapter – need to wrap up the second stage of the Challenge and then write the last and it'll be ready to post. I'm actually kind of impatient to get to the last stage of the Challenge – I've been looking forward to writing that for a while. Hopefully the final product will live up to what I've got in my head for it. ^^

For those who don't remember who "The Scowling Red" is, she's from the last snippet. :)

Also, I've censored some parts of this to avoid blatant spoilers for this chapter, but I suspect I've done it poorly…

_________________

The scowling Red offered the young Sheikah – currently with his eyes closed and hanging on for dear life as his mount tried its best to shake him off – a whoop and a harsh cackle. The dog-eared purple to her right snorted and raised an eyebrow at her.

"Cheering for the enemy now?" she demanded, drawing the attention of a few others.

The smile dropped from the Red's face and her lips twisted back into their customary scowl. "Cheering for something exciting finally happening in this Goddess forsaken place," she snapped. "When was the last time we had a show like this, huh?"

"You should be cheering for Ciardi's team! For the real Gerudo!" piped up one of the women in front her. A full-wolf near her growled in agreement.

"Apheri is mounted!" called the Arbiter from far below, and almost immediately thereafter, "Apheri is thrown!"

"I tell you what," snarled the Red angrily, getting to her feet, "when our 'real' Gerudo stop getting their rear ends handed to them by the Toothless Wonder and her two little boys, I'll start cheering for them again."

"They --------- the first stage!" cried the purple angrily, glaring up at her, ears twitching.

The red's ears flicked back to lay flat against her head and her lips pulled back even further from her teeth. "------------- the first stage," she corrected her as several of the women around them got to their feet, watching the exchange with interest. "Lierana -------------------- and Ciardi ---------------------------. I expect better from any I would call Sister."

"Ciardi is mounted! Apheri is mounted!"

"She has a point," noted a white nearby, leaning lazily back in her seat. "I'm with her."

"Apheri is thrown! Lierana is mounted!"

"Traitors, both of you!" cried the purple. "How can you—?!"

But the Red had done a tally of the woman in the immediate vicinity who she expected would side with her and had decided it was more than enough. She raised a lupine hand and struck the purple across the face with the back of it, sending her spinning and tripping down a level to land on the woman in front of her. The wolf beside them turned and snapped at them, and a woman a level further down than that turned to jump up and tackle the wolf. Someone from behind her jumped on the red's back and took her down to the ground, but an elbow to her attacker's face and a knee to the gut sent her tumbling down over the bleachers. And as simply as that, an entire section of the audience turned in on itself with a vicious snarl and chaos broke out.

"Oops," said the red with a malicious smile, "I seem to have started a riot."

Hey, sometimes people just don't want to wright. WoW is a perfectly good excuse, because you can un-wind... And I can totally know what she means because I now have a level 82 blood elf Paladin and have every intention of getting cool stuff. So... yeeaaaah. And a lvl 30 Worgen Warrior to level up.. and a Goblin Shaman...

uh.... you didn't hear any of this.

Hahahahaha! That makes me feel better for just plain avoiding my stories sometimes when I just can't get into focus mode. Everyone's got a right (and a psychological need!) for free time! Especially since writing a fan-fiction, as awesome as that fan-fiction may be, isn't a job you get paid for, so really she's beholden to us for nothing, except that she cares about her story and enjoys seeing us enjoy it. :) Let them eat cake! And play WOW whenever they please! Haha!

Heh, though personally I wouldn't pay squat for a game where anywhere I go in the game world there's going to be some jerk player killer that's going to kill my character just for the lolz, and any lootz. There's also the issue of $40 a month subscription fees for the game... and that's after paying that much just for the game client, that can't be played offline by itself. But my personal feelings of WoW aside... really I was just trying to make a joke what since WoW is notoriously known for being a time sink. (as well as a money suck) To which, my point was made gloriously for me by Mudora... As far as entertainment and one's personal preferences to relax, I pretty much believe, as long as it doesn't harm someone else in any grievous or serious manner, one can pretty much do whatever they want to do to relax. Many of it I wouldn't, and probably don't want to know about, but, as the saying goes; whatever floats your boat. That said, sometimes, somethings can go to far... drugs come to mind, or even alcohol, for an instance. And while WoW may not be as personally or socially damaging as those examples, it is somewhat harmful in other ways. Especially where money is concerned...

If I thought it would succeed, and get people to see WoW for what it is, I'd start a public boycott of it. A true WoW killer (movement) At any rate, a time sink is a time sink, WoW or not. and that's pretty much the joke.

2/14/2011 #38 Report
Mudora

lol, you probably should get your facts straight. It's only 14.99 a month. 30 something for three months, which saves you money and blah blah. I've played it off and on over the years, cancelling subscriptions when I want to, or whatever. Wow Isn't the only time Sink. Video games in general are, and where would we be if Zelda did not occupy our lives for a moment? Because lets be honest. All video games are toys. If you start boycotting wow, you might as well boycott all of our entertainment, which America won't seem to let go of, even in times of depression... and considering that's the field I'm going into? I'd like a job, thanks. Yeah, there are a lot of people who play wow, but that doesn't mean everyone who plays it is also playing it for loooong periods of time. I play it like any other game. Perhaps for an hour or a little longer, then I stop and do something productive. I write, I draw, I go to school, I clean my apartment, etc. etc. When people have free time, they should be obligated to do whatever they want. Heck, if I want to beat up people on wow? Sure as hell, I'm going to do it.

If you really want to complain about addictive behavior, complain about how South Koreans have gaming clinics to make them stop playing star craft.

And you also can't have the complaint where people kill you on sight. They don't get loot either. There are servers dedicated to PVP, PVE, and even RPing. And usually? I never get ganked, and when I do? It's fun to get revenge. So. much. fun.

PALADIN THIS N00b! ha ha! Good times.

If your post was meant to be sarcastic? Then whatever. disregard, but... seriously. It's like you're hounding rose for even considering to play WoW in what little free time she does have. *Shrug* It's a game, and if people are going to play it, let them do so. If it's consuming their life and making them not sleep at night? Yeah, it's time to put it away for a long while. But American citizens (or Canadian citizens for that matter) always have the right to view what they want when they want, and the same goes for vidjya gamez.

I'm getting off my soap box now.

? ...It seems the forum has gone to another topic. I know Rose is playing WoW, but why are we making a big deal on it again? I don't see the point in arguing, Its not like what we say would be enough to convince her to either stay on the game or quit it.

I'm just saying, by the way.

2/15/2011 #40 Report

True, lol, we are rather off-topic! But it is an interesting subject, the whole different perspectives on WoW thing, it makes me want to think and explain how I feel about it XD See, I'm kinda silly...I don't like fights, but I LOVE debates, and just kind talking out and explaining my vies and hearing others'! Perhaps WoW talk, should it continue, can do so in another thread, heheh.

Meanwhile, R&R / snippet-wise...just got to say, I reread the Return over the past 2 days and was really interested in how the whole "heart of hearts," Link's ability to increase his time travel skill, and the whole plane-traveling might play into everything that's going on in Reconciliations! Anybody remember what I'm talking about?

2/15/2011 #41 Report
Dark Lord Link

I second that! :)

Ah yes, who could forget that part? I never thought of it before but now that you mention it, it does look like it would play a role in Reconciliations!

Hmm... Blizzard must have lowered the price since that one review I read several years ago... or maybe I'm only remembering the mentioning of $40... meh. Whatever. As for sarcasm, not intentionally at least. And like I said, I don't play WoW, so I wouldn't know about what dedicated servers Blizzard would have. What I do know, is that every time I try to play an MMO some douche comes along and "ganks" the "noob." And with a player base as big as WoW... I'd probably no sooner log in my first time than some player killer come along and "yoink" me. But my personal grudges against all MMOs aside; no, I wasn't condemning Rose for devoting her spare time to playing WoW, or even gaming in general. Mostly my original post about WoW was a joke pretty much using every stereotype about WoW. That, and making an off handed suggestion that maybe that free time divided among all those things weren't being divided evenly.

My second reply was a response strictly for you Mudora. Also, what field of the entertainment industry are you aiming for?

2/15/2011 #43 Report
Mudora

I plan on going into the gaming industry as a character animator, cinematic story boarder, or (doubtfully) some form of concept artist. However, concept artist is like... not a job people get right out of college unless you're lucky. So, here I am learning Maya. (The 3-d program that nearly everyone in the industry uses). Game studios seem to have the environment I'm more used to - which means it's good to have some knowledge with a little bit of everything.

And speaking of Link's heart of hearts (getting back on topic. lol) I have my own speculations. I don't know if Rose would agree on these things, but I believe it's some part of Link's soul, who is reincarnated into hero, time and time again. He acts like Link... talks like Link, but is wiser, more level headed, and warns him with do's and do not's. It's the part of that soul that gives him his "hero instinct." I could be WAY off the mark, but... I don't know. Perhaps it's also because I'm a spiritual person, I really dig stuff like that. If the hero is so important, why not his soul be immortal and his body not?

2/15/2011 #44 Report
Dark Lord Link

Really? I bid you best of luck, I had wanted to be a part of the gaming industry, hopefully one day that will come true. Hope you get the best, Mudora.

That's an interesting concept indeed! I never would of thought of it, it's a valid point, and I believe that Rose was trying to portray the "Heart of Hearts" as such. Of course, I wont pretend to know what Rose was trying to portray in the story (Quite honestly I'm not bright enough to find these hidden meanings...) but it does make sense.

2/16/2011 #45 Report
A Rose Zemlya

Actually, you're correct. That's a big piece of what I was going for with it. :) Not the whole thing of course - there's more to it than that - but that's pretty much the base concept. ^^

Also, I come bearing a very small snippet - I actually, miraculously found myself with that super rare combination of time, inspiration, and energy to do a huge chunk of writing (as opposed to dribs and drabs here and there). I actually managed to add almost 5000 words to the next chapter, and I'm only a few paragraphs off of finishing up the second phase of the Blood Challenge once and for all and moving onto the final phase (and the last part of the chapter). I actually had it in my head that I would be able to do it today, but as is typical I over-estimated my own focus and under-estimated the amount of words I seem to need to say anything. :\ This is going to be a very long chapter when it's done - it's sitting at almost 17,000 words, which puts it up in the larger range to begin with, and I'm not done yet.

Most of what I have isn't snippetable because of spoilers or just not being snippet-worthy - so here's a bit of spoiler-free Link/Hunter banter:

_______________

"See?" Hunter says as we take our seats at an empty table at the back of the room."Not every problem needs to be solved with a Blood Challenge or a punch in the face."

"What makes you think I was going to solve it by punching her?" I demand.

"Past experience," he responds, giving me a dull look."The look on your face specifically said: 'I am going to punch you.I am going to punch you very hard.'I didn't just go through what I went through for you to violate the terms of the Challenge and get us killed on a technicality."

"She would have deserved it!" I attempt to defend myself, but he raises a finger to cut me off.

"Technicality," he repeats.

"Thank you," Apheri says, if grudgingly, before I can get louder about defending myself.

"No problem," Hunter says gracefully."Shared honour and all that.By your own rules she insulted me along with you.I happen to think I have very lovely teeth."

She stares blankly at him for a moment, then offers him a wide grin."I thought you didn't get the nuances."

"It was noted not more than thirty seconds ago that I am smarter than I look," he points out dryly."On top of that, I happen to be a very nuanced fellow. It helps that I have spent enough time with your lovely people over the last few, ill-spent years that I think I am actually starting to be able to warp my mind enough to understand them.Or at least predict them.Exhibit A: Mr. Punchy."

"She would have deserved it!"

"Technicality!"

LOZnJAKlover - sure, go nuts. :) As Dark Lord Link has requested, a link would be much appreciated when it's done!

I actually get questions along those lines a lot, so let me state in general that I will never say no to any kind of fan art - whether a picture, a fanfic, a youtube tribute video, and so on. :) The only thing I ask is for is appropriate credit where applicable, and that you send me a link to the finished product if it's available online.

The only exception to this blanket permission would be if you intend to use the final product for either academic credit, or to make money. I would ask that you contact me specifically for that kind of thing.

Another 5000ish words added and Round 2 of the Challenge is now complete - I'm not happy with some of what I've written today, but it's 1 AM and I need to go to bed. ^^ On to the final round!

The Link/Hunter/Gerudo stuff is all riddled with spoilers and impossible to snippet, so have some Eldrick and Liam instead (for those who don't remember Liam, he's the Captain of the Castletown Guard - he replaced Thomas as Agahnim's mind-controlled slave, almost killed Marni, and was used by Eldrick as his "hero" when he set up his little fail!rebellion):

_____________________________

"So," he said after the moment had passed and he was in control of his own expression again, "when all of this is over what awaits you?A handsome young man like you must have a pretty little something pining for him?If not, I'm sure they'll be beating down your door by the time we're through."

Liam blushed so brightly it was clear even in the dim light of the sewers."No, no," he stammered quickly, displaying a disgusting degree of humility."I don't…think there's anyone pining."

Eldrick's sharp mouth twisted wickedly."Come now," he said, "a blush that red and you're telling me there's no one? That your mind didn't immediately jump to a specific pair of lips and a nice set of curves?"

Liam blushed deeper still and Eldrick hated him for the honesty of the emotion."I…maybe," he admitted."Yes.She's…there's this one girl, but I…I think I might have screwed it up."His expression turned forlorn."When Aghanim had me, I…I didn't get the chance to explain. She's not in Castletown anymore, though," he pointed out."I don't know where she is.She's probably…I probably won't get the chance to explain."

Eldrick made a derisive noise."Liam, my friend, there is no pursuit so noble as the pursuit of a woman. When this is over you have my solemn vow that I will help you find your lady friend and I will personally vouch for you if she doesn't believe you."

Liam looked startled."You…really?" he asked, hoping brightening his eyes."She…Marni's very taken with the nobility. She would believe you, I'm sure she would."

"Then consider it done!" said Eldrick firmly."The least I can do, after all."

"Thank you, my lord," said Liam with genuine warmth. He leaned against the sewer wall and worked up the courage to shoot Eldrick a curious glance."What about you?"

Eldrick's wicked grin turned positively devilish."Nothing so specific as to have a name," he said lasciviously."There are a few women at the Palace that I had my eye on before this whole thing blew up on us, I might pursue one or two of them for a while.Or perhaps not.To be honest, now that I'm thinking about it they all seem a bit boring. They're all brunettes, but so were my last few."

Liam appeared torn between incredulity and amusement."Perhaps a blonde, then?" he suggested tentatively, unsure of how serious he was being.

"I was thinking a red-head, actually," Eldrick answered without thinking, distracted by a sudden grinding sound from above them.He was saved from Liam's inevitably tedious response as the trap door in the roof was pulled back. When they looked up he met the tired green eyes of the useless old Shiekah.

"We're in," said Brayden."Signal the others."
