Stemming from a question in response to my AN where I said I don't consider any of the characters to be all good or all bad, and try to imbue all of them (with a few exceptions) with both sides of teh coin and have compassion for where they're coming from.

Big Dick comes off as a pure jerk. But he's not all evil. He's greedy and prideful, but not evil. He's a survival of the fittest kind of guy- so anyone stupid enough to invest in his company (and get robbed) doesn't matter. They were dumb, he was smart.

As for how he treats his sons- he did keep custody in the divorce. That says something.

He's a bit of a narcissist, he sees his sons and company and wives as a reflection of himself. Dick is tall, handsome, popular, so he's proud of Dick. As for Beaver, in Big Dick's view he lacks manly characteristics, so Big Dick being mean to him is supposed to toughen him up, make him a man.

There are no excuses, but in his own head he's not being evil- he's raising his sons to be strong and taking what he can from people too stupid to know better.
