Quite a few reviewers think I hate Duncan. But I swear I don't hate him, I just don't like him.
Even when he's being nice I see it coming from a weasly place. But that's just me. For me he's a shallow pool of selfishness and taking the easy route. Blah. He's a little boy who was handed everything his whole life, he can't deal with obstacles or anything hard. He's selfish and lets things happen, never making a decision without prompting from someone else.
But I don't hate him, nor do I think he's evil.
In my view the rape was most likely not legally a rape. But he clearly cared more for his own wants than what Veronica would want. In fact I'd say he never considered what she might want. She didn't sleep with him when they were together and in love, but she would be ready to go at a party where she was clearly extremely intoxicated after three months of him being a complete a$$hole to her? Really? I don't see it. He violated her trust and her body, while thinking she was his sister (skin crawling here) and then leaves her in the morning not questioning the sudden rapid change in her appearance and personality afterwards?
And who thinks Duncan didn't know about Lilly cheating on Logan all the time?
And did he ever stand up for V to his mother?
Then there's his whole victim persona....
No. But I don't hate him, I just really don't like him.
I like the way you've handled Duncan. It might be a little harsher than I would go, but it always bugged me in the show that they just seemed to gloss over the fact that the sex was nonconsensual. I always found it odd that Veronica didn't have a stronger reaction to that, no matter that Duncan wasn't completely in control of his actions. I would think that in that situation, most women wouldn't just forgive and forget. And certainly not end up dating the guy again. Of course, I might be biased being such a big LoVe fan.
I think even if you want to give Duncan a pass on what happened there is too much ambiguity for any girl with a sense of self to be ok with it or to date him later on.
I dislike Duncan's selfishness, so my opinion of him is not based on the rape/non-rape alone.
I got another review/PM regarding DK and thought I'd share a bit of my response on his character from my view point (again).
I did skew Duncan from what we saw on the show, but I still think I don't write him as evil, just very selfish. His love for Veronica may have been real, he certainly believes it was real, but it was selfish as well. He wanted her, but didn't love her enough to be her friend if he couldn't have her the way he wanted her. He didn't love her enough to be there for her as her world fell apart because it was hard on him. I'm not saying I don't understand it- he was going through hell too, but he chose himself over her. And then he choose to stand aside and let his friends rip her apart. Again- would you let that happen to someone you loved, let alone someone who you thought was your sister, someone your sister had loved, someone who had lost all her friends, her mother and her home? If not then, then at what point does your compassion for someone you profess to love, overcome your own disappointed/hurt feelings?
As for Duncan with Shiloh - Duncan has good reasons for why he might not be embracing Shi as a sister. He lost a sister and there is his dad, with his long time lover- the relationship that caused Duncan to lose the love of his life- presenting him with another sister. Wouldn't it be like replacing Lily in Duncan's affections if Duncan accepted Shiloh so easily?
I don't find him to be beyond redemption...but I do find him to be selfish to the point of being a sociopath. He doesn't care about the feelings of others- only himself.
Ditto!!!
I don't hate him as well , but I was so happy when he moved permanently to Australia :)))) cause I really don't like him either.
Fifty
like I said before, I would be very happy to see duncan dead..
but sends him to australia also operates, just do not put him in any kind of relationship with Veronica, or in the middle of LoVe..
I hope you can update again soon (=
Another review made me think about our characters:
Duncan is problematic for me. I think I would have been kinder to him if the show had ever made him pay for his mistakes. But they didn't and that pisses me off.
"I don't find him to be beyond redemption...but I do find him to be selfish to the point of being a sociopath." This made me laugh, what would you say about a character you hate???
I didn't like Duncan on the show, I didn't hate him, I found him bland... I did hate him and Veronica on the show, such an inconsistency, such a difficult thing to swallow when you work, as I did then, with young abused teens who mostly have tv to learn about life... As long as this shameful storyline doesn't happen, you can do with him as you like and I'll approve, it's funny the way you put the "triangle" Duncan /Kendall /Wieldman, I'd like to see more of it...
