I write Firefly fanfic. I read Firefly and Castle. I try to review frequently when I read. It's good citizenship in the fanfic community.
My continuing series of Firefly stories is set post-BDM, and involves all the main characters. I even bring in Wash and Book from time to time, although it's a little more difficult to do, seeing as they are :-( dead. (Read and you'll see.) My starting point is canon, and characters gradually evolve from there. The stories are all part of a sequential storyline. My model is the original episodes. I usually write well ahead of posting, and typically post only complete stories. I appreciate reviews and comments. They're not the reason I wrote the stories, but they are the reason I post the stories here. So if you read and enjoy the stories, or if you read and don't enjoy them, I'd like to know. Feedback gives me motivation to keep up the work. And readers' comments often give me the impetus to write new scenes for stories. I love to discuss Firefly characters and their motivations.
I attempt to keep a balance of action and drama with romantic moments and hopefully a good dose of humor. I have a hard time picking which category to file my stories under. I suppose I'd choose Drama/Action/Humor/Romance/Sci-Fi/Western, if I could. More-or-less the same proportions as the original series, but Fanfiction dot net doesn't let you pick more than two categories. Same goes for characters. All my stories involve all the characters, although with Wash and Book being (ahem) dead, their appearances are somewhat fewer and farther between. Mal plays the role of leading man, just as in the TV series, but all the main characters get their moments, in greater or lesser degree depending on which story it is. I also bring in secondary characters like Badger, Saffron, and the Operative, and I like to pick characters with walk-on bit parts and flesh them out.
Stories in my continuing series (Firefly):
1. A Lion's Mouth
2. Adventures in Sitting
3. Sparks Fly
4. Expectations
5. Break Out
6. The Trial
7. Shadow
8. One Man's Trash
9. Bandiagara
10. Two by Two by Two
11. What Begins with an Apple
12. Ends with a Horse (coming soon)
One-shots and other stories:
Comparison Envy -- Firefly AU, with Castle references.
The Shiny Frontier -- Castle story with more Firefly references than you can shake a stick at (because you can't have too many).
Light and Shadow -- Firefly backstory that relates to my continuing series, but can be read independently.
10/24/11. Trying something new. Very few people seem to want to write reviews, which, to be honest, are the main reason I'm posting these stories on fanfiction dot net. So instead of publishing a 3000 to 5000 word chapter every four or five days, I'm going to try shorter chapters, posted more frequently, for Break Out. Depending on the response, I'll keep it up, or maybe just discontinue posting here. BTW, if you've written a review or comment or alerted any of my stories, thanks very much. That's what makes me feel it's worth the time it takes to write, edit, format, and post these things. And if I've reviewed one of your stories, would you consider returning the favor? /end of rant
11/22/11. The shorter chapters seem to be going over well with readers, in general, though a few a you have let me know you prefer longer ones still. I'm attempting to keep to approximately the same rate of posting as before, about 4000 words about every 5 days; it's just divided into two posts instead of one. Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate hearing from readers. Your comments feed into what I'm currently writing for Firefly.
5/9/12. Celebrating the quarter-million word mark. Thanks to all the readers who've commented and reviewed and let me know in one way or another that you're enjoying the stories. This is also a general "thank you" to those who don't accept PMs, as I'm unable to thank you personally for your reviews. Bandiagara and Two by Two by Two are two halves of a very long story...kind of a yin and yang. As I begin to feel more comfortable working with Firefly fanfic, I get more ambitious in my undertakings...and apparently much more verbose! I look back and marvel that my first few stories clocked in at a mere 12,000 words apiece. Please keep feedback coming as it informs what I'm writing now.
