23Montreuil Prison Study » After a disagreement about prisons and what they can do to a man, Madeleine and Javert are once again faced with the knowledge that they will not be able to change the other's mind with words. They decide to see if they can prove their point, instead, by placing Javert in a pretend prison situation with other volunteers and seeing what happens at the end of two weeks.

4 Doing Right The curé of M-sur-M has been left with all of the money Valjean had in town and three things to spend it on. He sets aside money for Valjean's trial then tries to decide how to divide the rest of it between the Fantine's burial and the living poor.

6 Madeleine's Intervention On her way to rock bottom, Fantine goes out one night and happens upon Madeleine giving alms to the poor. The sight of him trying to help people when he had ruined her life is too much for her and she starts laughing wildly, attracting his attention. Now that his sights have been set on her, Madeleine isn't about to stop until he can do something for her.

4 Aftermath of the Surprise After they are done laughing about the surprise, Fantine goes home to face heartbreak while Favourite finds herself happier than she's been in two years and seeks out her adoring artist friend, Blachevelle already forgotten.

2 Once More the Conquered When Valjean flees from the bishop's house with his stolen silver, he quickly runs into the gendarmes. They will not take him back to the bishop to be accused of being a thief in the middle of the night and so Valjean passes a long, painful night in jail waiting to be returned to the bishop and condemned back to Toulon.

4 The Heroism of Madame Magloire When Madame Magloire is tasked with bringing a deerskin to the fearsome man the bishop invited to stay the night, she finds herself forced to see past the convenient convict label and form an opinion on the man himself.

16 The Attempted Confrontation Valjean and Javert have their epic confrontation...or at least try to. Things would probably go smoother if they stopped talking over each other and nitpicking everything the other says.

13 It's a Wonderfu Life, Javert Driven to the Seine by Valjean's blatant refusal to make sense, Javert is stopped at the last second by someone else jumping in and automatically moving to save him. He says his name is Clarence and he's here to show Javert just how much the people he's met need him. Javert is decidedly non-impressed. What business is it of his if everyone around him wants to ruin their own lives?

6One of Those Faces » Valjean does not manage to escape before Javert gets a good look at him during The Robbery...and yet the other man completely fails to recognize him. Again. Now Javert has met Monsieur Fauchelevent, Valjean is pressing charges against his attackers, and Marius manages to meet Cosette before following her home. AU.

8 Post-Wedding Fun Marius completely misunderstands when his father-in-law takes him aside right before he goes off on his honeymoon to tell him of his secret past. Though, to be fair, how ELSE could he possibly take being told that his father-in-law had spent nineteen years in prison than as a threat if he hurt Cosette? Modern AU.
