As an author, I use an organic writing style which means I don't always know where a story will go, I let the story write itself. The drawback to this style is that without inspiration, there can sometimes be gaps between posting chapters - as I'm sure some readers have noticed - but it doesn't mean that I'm not working on the stories, merely that work is slow going. Things like deciding which of several different actions a character can take; choreographing action sequences so that they have a natural flow and not just a bunch of things lumped together; researching information on characters, places and events; these are all things that can slow down a story from the author's end, but they're also things that as the author I consider important to producing stories - even short character pieces - of acceptable quality.
I'm well aware that readers hear this from every author, and it probably applies to every author as well, but... REVIEW. While blatant flames, over-all ignorance and cries of 'this didn't happen in canon' are likely to get but a witty remark in reply, constructive criticism, saying what you as a reader liked or didn't like about a chapter or story, what you might like to see happen in the future - or not happen as the case may be - or even just asking for clarification if something confused you; they all help me as the author to produce a better story as it provides a different viewpoint other than my own and often will provide inspiration needed to advance the story.
While I freely admit I write for my enjoyment, knowing that others enjoy what I've created adds to that enjoyment, which helps me write more.
