This story is one of my all-time favorites, and I am particularly fond of this chapter and the previous one, which I reread whenever I want a particular cariety of Skywalker family interactions. I really like the way you bring Leia around to a willingness not onky to wirk with Vader but also to tentatively explore their family relationship. Your characterization of her is splendid; I particularly appreciate that she usn’t merely a ball of anger abd outrage but exhibits a fullbrange of emotions and motivations and yet is also uncompromising in her principles (e.g. her commitment to addressing injustice) and her personal convictions (the Organas are her parents). And your Luke is also delightful. It was very satisfying to get his summary of how he cane to believe in Vader since that provides a richer perspective on the events early in the story. It fills in some gaps in the subtext of those early chapters and helped me understand better what was going on with the hostage, for instance. I also noted on this rereading how Vader’s gift of tge Executor’s safety to Luke is outshone by his gift of the whole Empire to Leia (although, tbf, he did offer it to Luje first). Your Vader is one of my favorite versions: competent and clever and ruthless and holds a grudge like nobody’s business. The temperature and intensity of the black flames serving as an indicator of his mood is a striking and unique image, maybe tge best representation of this i have found in fandom. That Leia has pale flames feels very fitting and also makesxme wonder what Luke would visualize of his own presence if he could see it from outside.
PS I love your footnotes and author’s notes expanding upon tangents.

aaaarrrgghh, so, so badly do I want their family road trip full of Anakin's prequel stories as told by Papa Vader.

Re-reading this, I really wish we got more Force Unleashed style cinematics in the OG amd prequel series. Crumpled space ships/crumpled AT-ATs would've really hammered home the "Chosen One" and "there is no try, just do it!" side of things.

Yes, Captain Needa seems to be a charactor who could be used in a much expanded role. A suggestion for a scenario could be that he was reconised as a good leader and serectley recruited. We saw him die, choked then his body dragged out. But imagine if he was only choked to unconciousness then recruited in a secret unit. After all General Veers was imagined to be dead. Cheers.

In reply to DonR:
Agree wholeheartedly about wanting this story to continue!
Now onto the 'killing retreating men', I know its a standard tactic m8, I know all about how light cavalry was used for this from antiquity to WW1.
Yet there's a difference in MODERN war between shooting/stabbing a man who's pulling back but may return to the fight, and shooting a man who is running away IN THE BACK. Compounded many times over by the fact Veers was in an AT-AT and the soldiers on the ground may as well have spat at it for all the use their blasters would be against it.
Ok, sometimes it can still be legit if they are an invader who has committed war crimes or something, but in the case of Hoth it was basically murder at this point. Notice I do not call the shooting down of airspeeders in combat or shooting the men in the trenches this, only shooting the fleeing soldiers. Not even a surrender offer.

Interesting. I would have thought Wedge finding out the existance of his missing sister after so long would be dead keen to get in touch as soon as possible.
And I still would like more please.

Please, I hope this one can be continued. So much to come. The Corellia situation, such as who is behind it and how to resolve it. And how to keep a treaty between Alliance and Empire up, running and lasting. Thrawn, how is he to be used in this story. And not to mention the Luke and Mara Jade dance. How will they get to interact with each other, and then a relationship develop. Vader doesn't like the Solo/Leia pairing, I would think he will really flip when Luke and Mara Jade become a item.
As to the fact you wish Captain Needa was still around for use, perhaps Vader could have been recruiting followers earlier and pulled a Veers with him. After we saw his choke collapse some soldiers pulled the body away. Perhaps he was only made unconsious to be revived later, recruited and given a new identity. After all everybody knows Vader executes people, so it would be easy to choose suitable people. Of course they are dead, Vader killed him, do you want to question him about it?
And in answer to J about killing retreating men, standard tactic. You want to keep harrying retreating soldiers to turn the retreat into a rout. They will just want to get as far away as possible. One of the duties of light cavalry was to keep at them. If you just stop the retreat may then become a withdrawal then a rally, reform and new defensive position taken. Then you have to do another attack with the extra causalities to your own men.
Anyway as I requested, please return to this story please.

This is a great fic, I'd love to see it continued, but it's been 2 years since it updated, is it dead? :(

Big and clear difference between Veers and Luke tho. Veers was killing Infantry (including men who were RETREATING with their backs to him!) from an AT-AT, hardly a fair fight. Hence the 'Butcher' title.
Luke on the other hand destroyed a huge superweapon space station that was the aggressor in that fight, had just destoryed a planet (and the Empire calls the Rebels the terrorists? HA!) and was aiming for planet 2. That was an unfair fight, but against the rebels. Everyone on it knew it was called the Death Star, and that it had just destoyed Alderaan, if they were still on it they were complicit.
It's not the numbers, it's the very different situations...

God. I started reading this story so so so long ago. And eventually lost track. For years I’ve been meaning to catch up and now I have! And my god I feel I love with it again when rereading it! It’s 5AM but I’m too happy from this sorry to care!
Also, does vader know R2 is R2D2? Has he made that connection yet?! I wanna see a proper reunion between him and his droids!
I pray this story isn’t dead!
