I enjoyed this, even without having come across 'Supernatural'. Of course, in other science fictional universes, there's no reason why a shapeshifter couldn't be a genetically engineered life form rather than a wraith - think of some of the polymorphs, psirens, emohawks and so on that the crew of Red Dwarf encounter.
'It's not like the Barrayarans would let a clone of the son of their Prime Minister just wander around the galaxy.' Nice foreshadowing - especially with Miles realising that the Dendarii clearly need more training in dealing with infiltration.
