If the Great Deku Tree were in trouble, wouldn't the entire village gather as a mob to protect him? I mean, he's their father figure. If your father figure was in trouble and was being attacked, wouldn't you grab the nearest weapon and head over to help?
Of course, the actual effectiveness of the mob would vary considerably depending on leadership and the combat skills of each mob member, which in the case of the latter, would also vary considerably due to mobs being made up of random angry people. A properly led mob could be a force to be reckoned, while a badly led mob would be annihilated by something as big and strong as Gohma.

Hmm, a currency based off of something you can find everywhere doesn't quite sound like a...well, sound currency. Why would merchants accept a currency that they could just walk outside to the nearest rock or grass field, and gather themselves? All that would happen is rampant inflation as merchants stop accepting higher and higher denominations of rupees due to the supply growing wildly beyond everyone's control.
Maybe merchants would only accept the highest denominations of rupees as currency due to how rare they are? If they're suffiently rare enough, it could work. They'd be the equivalent of cowry shells: hard to find, light and easy to carry (assuming that the games don't depict rupees to scale, otherwise all bets are off), and impossible to counterfeit with medieval technology.
Then again, this story could be working off of pure game logic. In which case, you can safely ignore my ramblings here. :)

This is great so far! Luigi is actually my favorite from the Super Mario series so it's cool to see him in something, and this is well-written so far!

Even by Mushroom Kingdom standards, Luigi's not exactly normal.
A couple of normal power ups, plus either a Super Star, Mega Mushroom, or Invincibility Leaf... So he'll mostly have to rely on his speed, magic, and hand-to-hand combat skills. What's with the bros and never having their hammers on them, anyway?
