Now you make me ask, who tampered with Neville memorys?
Good luck

nooo... Harry, you stupid! Why didn't you tell a professor about Neville? why do you have to go and do something dangerous? do you hate grown-ups so much that you won't ask for help? and where are the professors anyway? this Hogwarts place...

This is a very believable reaction from Neville. I was expecting Harry to frog-march him up to the infirmary, but I think I like the idea of Theo being the one to get through to Neville better. Two abused purebloods should understand each other pretty well.

Ooh, snake spies. I love it! And for this BWL, I can see the rationale for getting on the team, but I'm afraid Jim will view it as encouragement to attack Slytherins even more.

Oh, I think I'm in love with Neville. And who knew that giving Hermione some etiquette books would create such a confident girl?

Oooh. I like the Scrimgeour was a Slytherin. I wonder if Harry plans to send him a note, too. ;-)

Nice start to the story. You seem to be handling the various "required" tropes well and the chapter flowed without seeming rushed. I look forward to where you'll take the story.

This story is very good. I love that Hermione and Neville are loyal to Harry in the face of their House.

Nice chapter. I look forward to future updates!
A thought: have you noticed that proper bouns are always the same no matter what language you use? For example, the name "Bob" would be uttered the same way in English, Hindi, German or even Swahili!
So it stands to reason that the same applies to Parseltongue…
I just cannot imagine a snake saying "Bob"! You'd think non-Parselmouths would hear a snake saying "Bob" or Egbert or Harry or James or any other name...

Well, logic is a subjective thing… think of it from the Professors point of view…
Alohomora is a charm that, ideally, is known to upper years … kids who are considered to have a bit more sense than 11-12 year old kids. Furthermore, the dog is too large to get out of the room easily (assumption, I know, but then again, Hagrid doesn't really dig small).
Now, they could put up complicated wards, but that would hinder them too … after all, if you are checking the security systems regularly, you can't jump through hoops all the damn time! It's exhausting!
So why not just leave it? Any student opens that door, they'll see the humongous three headed dog, get a fright, scream/yell their heads off, slam the door shut and run like hell! Then that information will make its way through the grapevine, and presto! No more students trying to find out what's in there. And people will remember Dumbledore's warning from before!
You can't get a better deterrent!
I'm pretty sure the staff would have a ward to tell them if the door has been open for too long, signifying an individual attempting to get past the dog.

Well, to be fair, most of the subjects at Hogwarts do require a lot of practical knowledge… it's one thing to know theory, it's another to apply it. Knowing about the theory of where human organs are doesn't make one an instant surgeon for one… otherwise Neal Patrick Harris' fictional character would be real!
So it stands to reason that potions can not teach you how to cast spells. It can only reach theory, but you'd have to learn practical application … so you'd need an instructor…
Kind of makes better sense to just learn both theory and practical in school the old fashioned way, doesn't it?

Oh that was brilliant!
Especially the bit about Snape asking questions that you turned on its head!
While I will say that he is detestable in the extreme, and well, many other … nasty things (I could write an essay about how horrible he is as a human) I doubt he is stupid enough to ask questions based on advanced material. Because quite frankly, why bother? It isn't as if every kid will read and memorise EVERYTHING in the first year potions book…
