Huh. Who knew that dear Wilton had a smile like that in his repertoire? He always gave the impression of being a bit of a wuss.
But, I figure that anyone that can deal with a barky set of brothers, and a grumpy general for a father, is NOT a wimp. He'd have to have a backbone of steel to keep from being beaten down by them; he just didn't have to SHOW it!
This was lovely. Jane and Wilton were always very well suited.
Too bad Janie didn't actually SHOOT that snooty thing (or shoot AT her! Accidentally on purpose, of course.), that would have shown the snippy little biddy that just because she was a fancy nancy (pbbblllttt!), she was NOT a woman.

This was absolutely beautiful! Your writing is simply exquisite. The interactions and descriptions of all the characters were so vivid. The gossiping townswomen, Jane's tear-stained face, Wilton Parmenter behaving as the perfect gentleman... I could picture it all, and even felt myself yearning for an ice cold sarsaparilla! I reveled over the access you gave to the Captain's inner dialog, being able to observe his heart tugging at him until it moved him to action. This story was so sweet, and it had a perfect ending.
Thank you for this wonderful tale, and for reviving happy memories of treasured characters from a beloved show.
