Hand-to-Hand combat means actually fighting hand to hand. Using a weapon other than your body does not qualify as hand to hand combat. What you are describing would be close range combat. Things like bows, pikes, spears, glaives and the like would be considered long range combat. As far as I am aware there is no such thing as a "half sword" what you are likely describing is a dual wield using a one-handed short sword and a parrying dagger which tend to have a longer blade.
