You’re making me gain weight with your virtual snacks, ya know. I love this fluffiness! A job well done.

yes, yes I did need a tissue. I love the vulnerable Leo you created, the reasons for his stolen childhood make a great backdrop for it. I also loved the idea of Raph feeling like he was left behind because they were best friends as kids.

Continuous lightbulbs turned on above my head as I read this chapter: I feel like I understand these brothers even better now. Kudos to Leo for showing vulnerability twice, being the bigger turtle. And Raph concludes "It's all my fault"...sounds quite familiar, kind of like what Leo has been thinking this whole time! So while it seems like L/R might be antagonists, the truth is probably more like they are a bit codependent/enmeshed, as both turtles use such all-or-nothing thinking when it comes to blame, behavior, everything. Also a terrific insight that Raph and Leo both feel emotions intensely, yet Raph turns his emotions outward, Leo turns them inward. And then Raph confesses that there is an attention-seeking component to his contrariness, how Raph would rather have Leo fighting with him than ignoring him; Leo is allowed to feel anything toward Raph but apathy. I caught that bit of throwing shade at Splinter, "inadvertently taking away the rest of Leo's childhood in the process," which is a great point: why did Splinter appoint a leader at all, why didn't he decide mission-by-mission (or just a round robin) who would be the leader for a day? Great fodder for Chapter 5! This excellent story kept me turning pages long after my bedtime; so much fun and so many feels!

What stood out to me most in this chapter was Donnie's placing his own hand on top of Splinter's, his first instinct to accept comfort and intimacy from his father...giving a medical report and exiting without comment/complaint when dismissed...even not being ashamed to admit at the very end that even with all his genius and all-night research, he has no idea if the confined puzzle-assembling idea will work. Of course Donnie is having a hard time understanding his brothers, because he just does not see the world in terms of power dynamics like L/R do. I only partially accept Splinter's explanation for all the fighting: I think it's pretty straightforward for Leo, as Leo has control issues, but I think Raph's anger is quite complex...I think Raph is fine with being a "follower" as long as he feels listened to, validated, and respected, yet he's got quite a lot of anger because he's not able to live a normal life, and Leo is the most convenient target of that anger. We already had Leo extend an olive branch in chapter 1, so it is Raph's turn to talk it out in the next chapter. Are we really at the end so soon? We were just getting started!

Most significant line this chapter appears to be "Ya know, it's not your fault." I went back and checked Splinter's dialogue for the last chapter, and even Splinter only held Leo accountable for Leo's OWN actions, not for keeping everyone safe. I do think that a lot of Leo's problems (and misunderstandings with Raph) stem from his choice to shoulder the world's problems. It was a great choice to keep the central conflict villain-free so we can focus first on brother-versus-brother and then brothers-versus-nature. On first glance this story seems to be about hothead Raph's character development, but I think Leo will end up learning more lessons by the end.

This story is such pure fun. Splinter's reaction is fair and appropriate, as always; it makes sense that they shouldn't be trusted aboveground or weaponized if they can't control themselves. And Leo finally learns how to make Raph listen: I-statements, honesty, vulnerability, anything but power games. This story has a great pace, a bouncy flow that deserves all of its reviews.

This was a nice story. There was enough drama to make me want to read on, thinking "what's gonna happen next?". And the ending was really cute.

They're brothers, teammates, they are ninja. They will always look after one another.
