for Harry gets some common sense

That is a phenomenal idea for a piece of a story.

It wouldn't work. As soon as Dumbledore hears about the basilisk he obliviates the shit out of everyone because it's against The Greater Good that the problem is solved so early in the year and without lethal danger for Harry.

I mean, Dumbledore KNOWS that it's a basilisk. He himself wrote the foreword to the current edition of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". In it he emphasises that EVERYONE MUST know the content of the book. It's the absolute minimum of beastlore that EVERYONE must know, and EVERY household has to have a copy.

And the content about the basilisk entry is the same, even if a little differently worded, as in the paper in petrified Hermione's hand. AND the last time the chamber was opened someone was killed, so the beast is known to be able to kill. And Dumbledore obviously knows what a basilisk's gaze does to the insides of a camera.

That it must be a snake is known to Dumbledore since the forties. Slytherin's special language skill, Slytherin's house mascot, Slytherin's coat of arms, well it can't be a squirrel now, can it? And what appeals more than the king of squirrels ...er... snakes?

So, Dumbledore knows and still the events in the second book happen. Hmm... It's really no wonder that so many people see Dumbledore as evil if Rowling drops bricks like that.

That book must've been very old, because "go-boom-weapons" are very old. The first proven fireweapon in Europe was the pot-de-fer, a siege cannon described in 1326, handcannons were in widespread use in France in 1338, the oldest surviving examples are from about 1380-1399 in France, Germany and Sweden. Chinese models are even older, but I doubt that the Black library has books in Chinese.

I like stories where non-magical weaponry is used against the baddies.

If you want to transport birds, there is a reason it is ensured they can't move their wings. To do otherwise is to all but ensure they will injure themselves

Ahahaha! NICE!

The goblins stop screwing around with solving the problem AFTER the fact and have decent screening mechanisms! :D

(Really, they should, realistically speaking. What if a customer is planning a massive break-in and packs a vanishing cabinet in their vault? At the appointed hour, they go down to 'check on their vault', have the vault opened, their assault force pours out of the vault, and Gringotts has a real problem on its hands...)

Funny story continue please.

No, common sense would involve NOT picking up something metallic that's been heated up by a dragon.

But don't worry, Rowling never had the slightest bit of common sense.

Good idea here! Could I use the idea for a longer one-shot or multi-chapter fic please? Many thanks

Funny, but why go to the safe house? Fly around and burn brooms until no more targets come up.

Are you going to do one where Harry tells Dobby he won't go back to hogwarts, Then go back anyway

I love the ones with the communication mirror and the goblins. i totally wish those had happened in canon. I admit I'm confused about what the first one has to do with gaining common sense; it didn't seem to improve anything.

another great chapter. sorry I had to post as an anonymous. the site glitched and registered my last review (that i made on March 16th) as the review for this chapter (which didn't exist then)

Nice story

Many authors do fics where Goblins hate Horcrux's and consider putting one in a vault a violation of the Treaties, yet they strangely have no wards to detect these evil items as soon as they enter the bank.
I like what you've done here.
