HOHMYGOD. i don't even know where to start. i've been binging this since i found it and i can say without a single doubt this is my favorite fic that i've read in AWHILE. just everything about it feels so perfect and right and real and even the mundane parts are interesting and help to ground me in that world. jenna is such a wonderful protagonist, funny and relateable and loveable and her inner monologue makes me excited to see how she reacts to what comes next.
the way you write relationships, trauma, the hardships of traveling in the wilderness, the affect that it has on jenna, the progression of the story, they all feel so REAL and its such an amazing experience. i've never been taken out of immersion by an awkward plot point or a character being out of character. maybe that could be taken with a grain of salt as i've only seen the movies twice as a casual fan, but i feel as though i'm watching them again reading this, with an extra twist. i love the pov shifts between jenna and thorin, they give so much insight and the different ways they react to things and what they focus on vs the other is such impressive writing.
and the consistancy you maintain throughout the story with so many things to keep track of over so long is just amazing btw. what! the fear and the constant shift between jenna getting a moment of peace and being halfway into a panic attack, and the way you write the thoughts and mental shifts like the aftermath of jenna's kidnapping and the conflict in thorin's head after she told him about azog is so . compelling! like im so invested its hard to form words about how amazing this is
AAHH and i haven't even touched on jenna's muteness! it makes for such an interesting new way to navigate the world, the dangers, the communication with everyone. i love how jenna communicates in expressions and body language and imagining those expressions , i dont know how to explain it but its grounding in that situation to imagine? like it helps me to further feel and understand what she feels. and her learning sign was such an obvious solution but i didn't even think about it and when the dwarves were voting i was like oh! of course! i will forever love the "did she just call us a fig?" line
the ways that jenna being there has already begun to change the plot has me on the edge of my seat constantly looking out for those indicators that something might be different, and so excited when things happen that i'm not even expecting, like jenna being attacked in that stream and realizing that the visions from galadriel thorin saw earlier were connected to it! oh my god and the description of those visions was so dreamlike and confusing and beautiful and exciting.
and this chapter. BAAAHH AAHHHH AHHH! oh my god its so stressful in the best way possible. i can't stop reading it! the literall cliffhanger! oh my god!
