When I saw the title of this chapter my mind immediately went to the Sherlock episode “A Scandal in Belgravia”, and I thought, “Oh shoot Jenna’s done something unexpected.”
When the Stone Giants didn’t appear I was panicking right along side Jenna yet secretly excited to see what you were going to do!
I always wanted to hug Bofur, too!
When I got to the place where you did the thing to the guy my daughter sat bolt upright and with insta-tears in her eyes yelled, “No! No! She wouldn’t!”
Jenna is going to be WRECKED when the adrenaline wears off…
Favorites: They could pry my few remaining tampons from my cold dead hands.; Boy had some pipes.; knuckle dusters and the tattooed hands; “Just a couple of keepsakes.”; 'A Wizard arrives precisely when he means to'; When Jenna realizes what happened; Bruh. (Had to stop reading cause we were laughing too hard at this.); a filet o' fish on a McDonald's parking lot; It would have to wait.; Hoo, was it hot in here? (aka Amy Farrah Fowler); This was unacceptable.; plate of nachos for a brain; going abruptly from feral to frightened and a terrified little squirrel.
This WHOLE chapter but especially, ESPECIALLY the end scene where you did the thing to the guy (and WHAT a guy)…

Holy shit. This was such a stressful chapter! In a good way though lol. You've definitely nailed 'palpable dread'.
It was great hearing Jenna's POV, filling us in on all of her shitting-her-pants anxiety over timeline stuff going out of whack. Truly a worst case scenario for these gals in Middle Earth to face- canon being non canon compliant LOL.
So sweet of Bilbo to ask if she wanted to dip but I'm sure her refusal made him feel more not cut out for the quest. Poor dear. And Thorin, my boy, just settled down near her 33 Even if out of convenience, my heart can't take it. But god, the waiting for the floor to give out was horrible. I'd have needed a gallon of pepto bismol to settle the knots in my stomach...
OOOPH. The whole trip down into the tunnels was great- disorienting and descriptive enough to make sure we know its BAD and DANK af down there. Truly, your depiction of the goblins was horrific and yeah, a hygienic nightmare was spot on. Like yes, I knew the goblins looked nasty and grimy and crusty all in one... but you stopped and dragged them into a florescent lit bathroom with one of those magnifying mirrors LMAO. You didn't have to do em like that but... fuck em, they deserve it! XD Makes the orcs look pristine in comparison.
You really made the goblins SCARY. Like you changed the soundtrack to a suspense horror piece and got me worried for everyone's safety. Before, I liked the Goblin Town song but this made me realize they were really fucked up for singing that XD Like... so rude, so unnecessary, so disrespectful. Not only are they about to torture and kill my guys, but they're gonna narrate it in song? Like it's Broadway with blood? Hell no. That's wrong. Controversial take but, those goblins are sickos.
And I'd been waiting, waiting, for the other shoe to drop. When Dwain first put Jenna's hood up... I thought of the troll scene in A Light in Arda where it's mentioned that women are a delicacy and I figured that tracks... And oh boy. Firstly, Jenna's dawning realization that they all early and that meant they had longer to survive while in the goblins' clutches- terrifying. Bringing out the torture machines, and them actively trying to behead our Thorin? I felt SICK. Props to Jenna for going berserk mode and saving her man- I'm sure that's going to result in some great conversations later- but it just kept getting worse! When they discovered Jenna was a woman... smh. I wasn't prepared. The Great Goblin was a lot more than comedic mini boss here; he was in control. He really felt like he could end some lives. Genuinely, I thought some people were going to get tortured at the very least. But when he grabbed Jenna, and she conveyed how massive and stupidly strong he was, I was scared for her. I half expected the goblins' finding out she's a woman would take a pervy turn but no, somehow, someway, worse. A fucking gift for Azog? OH GOD NO. I don't even want to imagine what that would entail. When Jenna and Thorin shared that look of sheer horror, I was there with them. It felt so helpless and hopeless and so dark. (I love it!) Like... if they ever make it out, I need those two to HUG. HARD. Bloody hell. Now I'm scared of Azog even seeing her! Omfg.
When Gandalf showed up, clearly it was a relief but oooh you're tricksy! You lured us into a false sense of security! We're going along the run with them all, its scary still and crazy but we know everyone gets out okay. right? RIGHT? LOL You pulled the rug out from under us just like the support under Dwalin! Despite the nerve wracking action, it's really sweet how he saves her then she saves him- or tries to. Because they're fucked. LMAO. I don't know what they can do. Will they miss the mountainside battle? The eagles? Are they going to run into Bilbo? Or Gollum? I'll lose my shite if Gollum-chan makes a cameo XD
This is crazy awesome and my head is spinning trying to think of all the possibilities! I'ma go scream now.

GOOD GRIEF WOMAN! Are you trying to kill me?! Giving me a heart attack like that when I saw poor Dwalin laying there and not moving?! Oh my gosh, I seriously felt a horrible clench in my heart. I guess this is you getting me back for Nori getting hit by lightening huh? Argh!
Ok, backing up a bit, I loved the descriptions of Goblin Town! I always thought the smell would be more like a cat lady’s house that’s full of 100 cats and the 5 litter boxes haven’t been changed in 5 months XD but a bunch of dumpsters and rotten eggs definitely would make me want to vomit, especially if it was breathing on me, haha! I loved the concern that Thorin and the others showed for Jenna (romantic sigh) and I loved the hood idea! Although, I was totally expecting for them to think she’s a boy because no woman in Middle Earth has short hair like that, lol!
Moving forward, that was so badass of Jenna to help Dwalin! I had to laugh when she thought “Stupid! Idiot! Plate of nachos for brains!” XD Girl?! Where do you come up with this stuff?! It’s friggin HILARIOUS and I laugh so much! Your story makes me breathless from anticipation, and cry from laughing so hard.
Truly a masterpiece! But I’m so gosh darn upset that you left us hanging in a cliff! And we don’t even have any idea when we’ll find out what happens to them! Ahhh! So, crazy! Poor company! I can’t imagine the anguish of continuing on without Jenna and Dwalin! It would be so hard, Nay, almost impossible for Thorin to leave his best friend and the woman he loves! I can’t imagine it! But he has to do it, for the other 14 people that depend on him. Wow. It’s so crazy.
Also, I loved the look that Ballin shot her. He was upset at the situation but he couldn’t be upset at her since she hadn’t hid anything. Looooooooove ittttttt! PLEASE update soon! :’(

I'm on a re-read of this story as I haven't read these early chapters in a few years, and I'd almost forgotten how good they are! They're so thorough and detailed without ever dragging; your writing stays engaging all the way through. Part of that is down to the spot-on characterisation (I'm thinking about the whole story now, as well as these early chapters) – you manage to keep everyone in character even when you go off-script, which is such a valuable skill in fanfic, and you go off-script a lot. That's another of your story's strengths: you don't just stick to the book/movie beat-for-beat, adding a couple of lines in response for the OC or giving the OC some of the other characters' existing lines, as so often happens in fic. You've added so much original material and yet this still feels like the same story and characters we know and love. It also means that Jenna feels like a fully-integrated, necessary part of the plot, a genuine protagonist driving the story, rather than tacked on (in the "the book/movie happened and OC was also there" vein). This is especially impressive considering Jenna brings the Company to 15 (and 14 was already a lot), so she could easily feel surplus to requirements, yet she never does.
Re-reading this has made me so glad you've resumed updating, as I remember what drew me in to The Loudest Silence in the first place 6 years ago. Knowing now how Jenna and Thorin are going to connect on an emotional level, and how their dynamic is going to develop, makes these early interactions such a treat to revisit. I'm glad to have all these chapters to read again while we wait for the next update!
