Lovely. Great ending (until the epilogue). Can't wait for more. I am curious about the title, though. The phrase "spirit of dissent" could refer to either Oskar (hardly a harmonious individual or influence), or Discord finally doing something notable.
- Slightly annoying that Oskar took the "spare the enemy" route with Sophie. It had decent emotional weight with the "death would only be a release for you" thing, but even the smallest enemy has the potential to hurt you. After all, Oskar didn't have an GUARANTEE that he would be able to return through the portal the next day.
- I DEFINITELY think it was odd that Oskar didn't bother to either disintegrate or take ((Does he have a magical hammerspace? I don't remember...)) all those storm sapphires. He already saw that a tiny bit of magic was integrated into those machines (don't remember what they were, but I definitely remember it being mentioned), so leaving an entire ISLAND's worth of electro-magical converters seems foolhardy. Also rather counter to his established pragmatism (bunch of free converters to take home) and paranoia. The shenanigans with Tabitha obtaining magic just go to show that Oskar should have cleaned up his mess; SHE may not do anything bad with it, but THAT world, with BLACKWATCH in it, getting MAGIC? Scary.
~ I wonder if that Pinkie-crush thing that was hinted at will ever be followed up on. I was slightly hoping that Pinkie would have reacted in a way indicative of it when the engagement was revealed to her. Pinkie being Pinkie, I don't think she's capable of something as selfish as jealousy, but SOME kind of sign would have been nice/interesting.
~ ... If it turns out that the Equestrian version of Oskar is Flash Sentry, I don't know how I'll feel...
~ Can't wait to see what happens with the Eldeer. Ha, I can imagine all sorts of scenes/conversations. Oskar: "So you're worried about an inexperienced ruler like me having such prominent international influence? And your society has an established method of suicide and voluntary sacrifice of the soul in order to provide wisdom after death? ... You could just let me eat one of you when you reach the suicide-age, or mind-read one of you as the spirits continually channel more knowledge through you and into me. Sure, you'd have competition for the first time in millenia, but it's not like I'm going to dismantle or submit my nation because you want me to. So your choices are a loose-cannon, inexperienced ruler and nation, or a competitor." Eldeer: "..."
