They say that "'Who' is merely following the form of 'what' and what he is a patchwork doll, more patch than doll. He is a killer. It could be a bit silly to ask a patchwork doll who he is, wouldn't you say?"
Deal with the Devil is at play here: Sure, Mab can give Bucky his memories back but...nothing is free is it not? For his Heart's Desire, Bucky will have to pay a price. At least he can read some of the fine print. Whether he'll be able to live with himself, though? Well, that's up to him.
Even if he got his memories back, things wouldn't be the same. In some ways, he would be the person he was before. But in so many other ways, he would be different. Thing is, I read something similar in another story regarding something like this. I could recommend it to you if you want.
This has come to my mind regarding to your 'verse' Bucky Barnes. Sure the Winter Soldier is 'dead' but if it ever got out that he & Bucky are the same person...Calling it 'The Trial of the Century' would be an understatement.
It would be a mixed bag of sorts of what would happen.
He would get a trial of sorts & likely wouldn't face prison time or an execution. He probably wouldn't held responsible for his actions as the Winter Soldier due to the extenuating circumstances of his torture and brainwashing. That he's a World War II veteran and former POW only garner him more sympathy. He probably would've been sentenced to a psychiatric facility but the programming was removed...
Even though Bucky regained his memories and is a good guy again, he still killed a lot of people while he was the Winter Soldier: A number of them being important public & international figures, thus making him a wanted fugitive by governments across the world & back. He was the literal bogeyman for decades. He did almost killed several of the good guys, some of them being the Avengers, something people will not too kindly on. Even if they buy that he was Brainwashed and Crazy, the best case scenario is that he'll end up under close scrutiny from now on, likely for the rest of his life, who would be treated as a threat if he so as much as breathes in the wrong direction.
They wouldn't be entirely wrong not to as Bucky can slip back into the Winter Soldier persona at the drop of a hat, even if it's for the sake of 'good'. Yeah, I have a mixed view on that in your 'verse'
They're not going to just let such a international & dangerous individual walk off scot free after all.
The Avengers would do everything to protect Bucky from the fallout...but one thing I do notice about the superhero franchise is that superheroes are not universally loved. They HAVE to deal with public opinion. People aren't stupid, they can easily read between the lines & draw conclusions from there. Such as the fact the Avengers, especially Steve could have not known about Bucky being the Winter Soldier, that alone would get people to turn on them.
If it ever got out that Bucky Barnes is/was the Winter Soldier. Even if he's got people in his corner, he's likely screwed, at least to an extent. Due to his actions as the Winter Soldier, it's almost a guarantee that Bucky will spend the rest of his life being hated and feared everywhere he goes. He won't be able to go out in the public ever again. Then there's also the very real possibility of Bucky having to spend the rest of his life watching his back in case the family & loved ones of those he killed under HYDRA's control decide to come after him for revenge.
That part with the Weasley's & Bucky killing Arthur is still yet to come but it will be...emotional.
At best, some people will never trust him & will see him as a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. At worst, they'll want nothing to do with him.
Bucky already hates himself as it is. He wants to be forgiven but forgiven by whom to be exact? The only one that can forgive Bucky for his actions is Bucky himself. Him & him alone. No one else can take that away from him.
Bucky is not alone. He is surrounded by people who understand how he feels, and even if they don't, they will still try to help him! he doesn't have to shoulder the burden alone, alright? But if he wants to, that is alright too, Bucky just has to remember he has people who would do anything to help him! And even if the entire world is against him, they will be there for him.
Anyhow, it feels good to get that out there. I eagerly await your response! :)

Gotta say, I want more of this. Aside from the fact that just name wise the Winter Soldier is a nice match for the Winter Mantle, Bucky/The Winter Soldier is a VERY good fit for the role of Winter Knight. He's a man in need of a mission(at least at this point of time in his personal development/this time period after regaining personhood) and she's a "woman" in need of a mortal soldier. I'd imagine the Mantle would also agree with him in particular given what we know after Harry has it thrust upon him. Goodness does not in fact counteract it's baseness, logic and pragmatism does. Both of which The Winter Soldier has in abundance. He's always calculating; how much is the wind going to affect a bullet from here to there, where are the best hiding spots, where are the entrances and exits and which ones are the better choice at this moment? What can I use to achieve my objective? I imagine that although those are all instinct for him it'd be able to AT LEAST counteract the baseline level of change that The Winter Mantle causes on the psychological level. It also helps(for both parties) that his previous... Profession, taught him all the skills that Mab wants in a Winter Knight. She doesn't need just another heavyweight to throw around power, she needs somebody who can be her eyes and ears in the Mortal realm, somebody who can be as quiet or loud as she wants, somebody who can trust to do whatever job she needs done.

Apparently, it's been a while since I read your work, so I'm promising myself now that I'll go through and get myself caught back up, starting with this one-shot.
I really liked this one; it's nice how all the winter imagery really flows from one world to the next. I also really enjoyed Bucky's reactions to running into something so alien. I'm very curious as to what it would look like should he actually try to eliminate the Winter Soldier.
I also would really like to see a Dresden vs Bucky matchup now.
