I was rather expecting Merlin to be the avatar until queen Annis said that Leon would be her emissary to the avatar...hmm, he still could be, except for his memory of sticking out in the earth kingdom for being a fire bender. Although that only rules out the possibility that he was like Korra and learned three elements very young. Aang didn't do that. So I'm still going to hope for it.
