I say that lucy's hair was always black because why would the parents dye a baby's hair black and let her be goth? And when lucy had blonde hair I'm pretty sure that it was a wig.

Show rather than telling is an important part of story writing, and I'll admit you did a great job at that.
If anything, I wish Leni cried just a bit with the idea that she was giving her child up.
