Man, why's Sirius criticizing Bella's protection of Regulus when he himself abandoned him. Selfish prick. If Sirius really loved his brother and thought he was going to the 'better' side of the war, he should've taken his brother with him when he left instead of leaving him with Bella's protection.

On reread, I am surprised by Bella's reaction, since in Chapter 1 she went to a lot of effort to make it seem the Aurors had killed her.

Aw, great heart to heart! I loved how you wrote that entire "I want to understand" conversation. To me you did a great job exploring Bella's reasoning and beliefs behind her actions, and it was really interesting. Excited to see how that conversation plays into the next time Bella sees Hermione!

Intriguing idea from the start, I’ll give you that.
The idea of Bellatrix Lestrange having an animagus form is simple on its own, but you definitely deserve credit for your in-depth exploration of how she ended up hiding in that form for so long that she literally forgot about her human life, initially adopting the form for safety and eventually remaining in it for so long that it just becomes easier to stay that way rather than face her more complicated feelings in particular.
You manage to provide some interesting insight into how Bellatrix’s sisters coped with her loss without making it appear too out of character, Narcissa and Andromeda each reaching a tentative reconciliation when they come together to mourn despite their differing views at this point in their lives. Even the circumstances that led to Sirius meeting her and subsequently ‘introducing’ her to the Order made sense, as her reaction leads him to conclude that she just may be worth at least trying to help her.
As for the rest of the Order, their reactions to the news of Bellatrix’s presence and Narcissa’s new association with them worked very well, balancing Narcissa’s loyalty to both sides of her family in a manner where it makes sense that she can visit Grimmauld Place to meet with her sisters without ever being in a position to explicitly compromise either side. Even Bellatrix’s interesting ‘relationship’ with Hermione makes sense, as Hermione’s natural protectiveness prompts her to try and support a vulnerable figure who needs help, only for that image to be shattered when she learns exactly what Bellatrix did in her past career and why she was wanted.
Considering Bellatrix’s hostility towards the idea that she’d ever have done anything to Regulus, I find myself wondering if her time in her animagus form has increased her sense of ‘pack loyalty’, which could have interesting consequences if certain events still play out; will her tentative plans to return to ‘the Dark Lord’ be affected if one of her pack suffers a significant loss…?
Plus, of course, I look forward to seeing what happens the next time she has to spend any particular length of time in Hermione’s presence as she has to spend more time thinking about what she had in the past versus what she’s basically ‘gained’ in the present.
Keep up the good work; can’t wait to see how this plays out.

I need more of this. It's absolutely brilliant, in every possible way. Everyone feels in character, and they're reacting to things exactly how I'd expect them to. I simply cannot wait for more.
