Though I had to look up shigellosis. Never heard of it.
Anyhow, so glad the Volturi didn't end up killing Jasper.
I've wondered that myself—about internal and external body noises. I just figured it was a group of noises that would be blocked out, become part of the background noise. Like isn't there almost always a breeze? So tree limbs would be rustling. There's water flowing, traffic, animals creeping around in the woods, people moving and their clothes swishing. So much noise out there!
And no wonder Emmett would be happy all the time. Imagine the giggles from him every time somebody farted. Of course, Emmett would be the one to laugh at farts!
