for you can't run from the shadow (but you can invite it to dance)

Found this story by chance, recently got into the FFXV fandom, and I’m loving it so far. There aren’t enough stories that occur during Regis’s younger years, let alone his childhood. I honestly can’t wait to see how this goes. (Hopefully all the way to the game events? 3)

Wooooooooow, at first I thought that this was going to be a SI reborn as Noctis sister then you surprised me with this mc actually being Regis sister instead of Noctis... I'am actually really, really excited to read this story, I love SI stories and I love even more stories that tries to expand the world and other characters by simply the happening before the canon starts.

Loved the chapter and can't wait to read the next one (and sorry for the bad english).

Suddenly wondering... Since their are royal twins (and in the case Rayna can’t figure out a way around the ‘duty’ of their line fast enough), if the time comes that Regis has to take on the ring, could he share the burden with Rayna? If each of them only held the ring and supported the wall for half of the time (and each had time to recouperate) that would make a huge difference in the toll it took, right?

Loved that chapter. And oh how I wish someone had done what Rayna did here for Gladio an Noctis when they first got to know eachother. The way Gladio looked down on Noctis as unworthy because he wasn’t automatically ready to be king at age 12 (definitely seeing that whole mentality of treating kids like they’re already supposed to act like adults there) and during their training sessions he seemed to spend most of their time just beating Noctis to the ground instead of actually teaching. Gladio was way bigger, years older and had been trained all his life while Noctis was a kid (with some real trauma behind him) that had spend quite some time in a wheelchair with a big possibility of being permanently disabled, there was never a chance that he was going to be able to fulfill Gladio’s expectations. And Noctis wasn’t stupid. Of course the kid could see that the big boy who spend all that time throwing him to the ground and who was supposed to protect him looked down on him and only was there because of duty. Of course he’d want to spend as little time with him as possible. My biggest problem with Gladio was... that I actually do like him. It’s just that it seems he never quite gets to that point where he fully sees Noctis as something more than a duty, as someone who’s supposed to fulfill a certain role (and little more) and when Noctis acts outside of that role, instead of looking at him as a human being first and seeking to understand him and push him forward from there, Gladio just spends his time berating him. It gets better than in the beginning when they were kids and Gladio sees that Noct does have some ‘worthyness’ in him, but I can’t help but think that things could’ve been so much better between them if someone had steppend in in the early days and told Gladio there is more to life (both his and Noctis’) than duty. If that someone had gotten Noctis (who’s also definitely an introvert) to speak up a little, to stop keeping all his thoughts to himself and explain himself if he wants his shield to understand him and not let Gladio walk all over him.

It’s Just painfull to me, those two. I really think they could’ve gotten a much better relationship if someone had just steppend in at the beginning. It’s Not like their characters are totally incompatible, it’s just that there are some communication problems with Noctis’ sensitivity and introvert nature and Gladio’s quick judgement, loudness and tunnelvision when it comes to duty, but it’s not like those aren’t things that could be fairly easily overcome once they’re made aware of it... By the time the game comes around, it seems their relationship is more or less set in stone. Gladios has had too long to be sure that his judgement are correct and that the way he acts as SHIELD is just fine (even as he still spends a lot of time looking down on his liege and puts more value in his duty than the actual person), and Noctis rarely really argues with him when he talks down on him cause he’s never really gotten through before... And since they are mostly friends and there is fondness between them it’d probably be hard to convince them there’s a problem there... I wonder with Rayna thought of that when she played the game? Sorry, I’m rambling. It was just one thing that your story touches on that really bugged me. Gladio was the shield but if I had to point out the one in that group who was truly there because he wanted to protect Noct, it’d be Ignis.

I really like the way you had Clarus being very simular to his Son here and the way you had Rayna push on the fact that Regis deserved to be more than just someone’s duty. If he learns that lesson well he might pass it on to his Son. Canon Clarus’ relationship with Regus DID turn out just fine so he probably didn’t think there was any problem when Gladio went to Noct with mostly the same additude he started with.

I’m really curious where you’ll go with this story. ;) We DO know that Regis at some point must go around and gather the royal arms (and that most of his companions don’t end up following him back home). I wonder how that Goes when there’s two of the royal line. :D yeah, I already love this story. I hope you didn’t mind my rambling. ;)

Good chapter.
You know, for some reason, I want to see Regis die just so that his parents and all the adults react that the only remaining heir is someone that they purposely ignored.

Actually, is there a chance that the Crystal chooses Rayna instead of Regis? It would be the ultimate WTF for all the adults.
