Well AWAES, thank you so much for joining in with our Halloween prompt, and sorry its taken me so long to get to this delightful (and spooky!) contribution!

I do love the elements of fact and fantasy woven within this, and most of all your terrific command of character that had me readily imagining the Anne with an E versions of these characters, though Anne's love of melodrama and mystery, Diana's ready attempts to soothe and Ruby's trepidation for anything spooky or sinful are quite distinguishing features of them in canon and any iteration, and you have drawn them beautifully here.

I very much enjoyed Anne's obliviousness and being so easily carried away with her tales, and the subtleties of Diana's attempts to placate Ruby and rein in Anne. Anne in particular is so lively and vivid, with her love of exacting descriptions and new information, such presidential coffin adornments. I laughed out loud when poor Diana thought the tale of two sisters was going to herald a more pleasant change of pace, and turned out to offer even worse conversational talking points. And it is beautifully Anne-ish to worry just as much about the poor pigs as anything.

A most enjoyable Halloween diversion! Welcome to the fandom x

I love the dynamic here between the three girls - Anne is waaaay into telling the creepy stories, Ruby is feeling faint at mere mention of ghouls, Diana is trying to smooth everything over. They're good 19th-century stories, too - prophetic dreams and spiritualism and all. Are the sisters the ones who cracked their toe knuckles to make the ghost-knocking sounds? If you ever need a way to scare Ruby over in "In the Woods," you can always rig a haunting for her (I'm almost caught up. Just 25-30 chapters behind now :))

One thing I missed the last time I read this was Anne saying "there's a picture" as if it were proof. Gold. Also the "they'd regret it right now line" is still funny.

Thanks for posting this and participating in the Halloween prompt!

Ha ha, yes this is perfect. I laughed at ‘I thought it was extremely unfair for the pigs.’

You wrote their characters so perfectly. Diana trying (and failing) to bolster timid and pious Ruby, Anne revelling in the retelling, using spooky voices, I liked the bit where she was sure she’d regret it later, but the other girls were going to regret it immediately.
