This is a very well written story. I do love all the lore and world-building. I do hope this story continues. I wonder how they’ll do magic. My favorite series about mermaids, the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly, uses what’s called ‘songcasting’ for its magic system. One of the reasons given for this in the story was because ‘wand-magic’ didn’t travel well in water, and the voices of the Mer were strengthened to do just that by Neria, the Sea Goddess, when she created them when Atlantis fell. You obviously don’t have to do that, especially since the merpeople here in this story aren’t limited to the water, but I do think it’s a cool system.

Name: Cadence abadie

Power: Minor Entrancements (simple hypnosis - strongest on humans, moderate on normal mer does not work on the royals)
Personality: Cadence can be a bit mistrustful and snobbish at times due to having a very tense family situation. she is calculating and proud in means to cope though really she is she does warm up to someone however she is very affectionate towards them. She likes to think she is grown up and mature but still has a lot to learn. She does not like showing weakness or emotions especially towards men. It takes her longer to warm up towards men because she doesn’t trust them and most of the time decides she doesn’t like them before knowing them. She is a raging lesbian and tends to fall inlove easily. This probaly leads to her getting a star struck unrequited crush on one of the girls for a while before getting over it. She would probaly bond the best with Emma who would be able to deal with her mood swings and understand some of her issues Such as being disowned. She would also most likely be close with Nakia who has a stabling presence as well as likelihood to not deal with Cadence’s bs.
Back Story:
Cadence grew up in a Emotionally distant religious house hold in France. Her familial issues led to her being very prickly and tense. The only time she really felt relaxed and free was when her family went to her grandmother’s house in a coastal town. As a 14 year old visiting she developed a bit of a Summer fling with another girl there. The two ended up going skinny dipping together and ended up in a moon pool where they became mermaids. Cadence was surprised of course but oddly accepting of the fact. She was happy with her mermaid girlfriend for a while but all good things come to an end. The two were found as mermaids by Cadence’s family who were shocked that their daughter was a mermaid and also gay. The family had a arguement with her parents thinking Cadence made a deal with the devil and Cadence’s grandmother fighting back against it. At the end Cadence’s parents disowned her and she moved in with her grandmother at the Small coastal town. To her misfortune she never got to say goodbye or anything to the other girl who’s family were ending their vacation around tha time anyways. She always wonders what happened to her. Living with her grandmother was significantly better yet she was self isolating and filled with a head full of self loathing and anger. It was roughly a year later when she heard the Harold’s call. Her and her grandmother both decided after some trepidation that it would be best for Cadence to go to Atlantis where she could be safe from her family possibl attacking her for being a mermaid and find a community to belong to.

Just a note: her fling does not have to be in the story. That girl probaly had a happy life with an accepting family. If you would like however you may include her and create your own version of her.
