I think what makes this work is not so much Luffy's unexpected observation haki, it's that the one thing, or one person, who could make Ace turn and run is Luffy. We know that protecting Luffy comes above anything else for awesome big brother Ace.

This AU definitely has potential, but ending it here is also a good decision. It leaves open to the imagination what else could have happened. I thoroughly enjoyed getting a different take on how Ace could be saved. Thanks for writing this gem!
