Depressing in a way. But more power to the Peacekeepers (at least in this world) for holding fast to what they believe in

A clever point, to imply that Zakharov has the hidden motive of justifying his own use use of nerve gas later, along with other considerations. Lots of realpolitik, and the idealism not to gas ones' enemies with chemical weapons is realistic too. The final line could be poignant if the Peacekeepers are then wiped out by the Spartans, or ironic if they do end up committing atrocities in future. Greek gifts is good, although I had to think twice about whether 'he did not believe in taking hostages' referred to a Spartan leader poised to kill everyone, or to Lal not taking Zakharov's students hostage to get some more help.

It's always a tricky debate: how to balance morals vs fighting against a much greater force. Funnily the one option that wasn't brought up was surrender.
Of course, all this discussion on atrocities are based on the hypothesis that war is inevitable and can't be considered an atrocity in itself, and it always favors the more populous and better armed (who have the means to kill humanely and win), so Lal has decided that the loss of his people's lives and culture/values/ideology is a lesser evil compared to making the Spartan military die very painfully.

I loved how shameless zakharov was. Also his cohort of smart but rather clueless students, who had never paused to really think what they were doing.
To be honest Lal always struck me as a leader who'd quickly be disposed of (democratically or by force) IRL as soon as his faction stopped being one of the most powerful. Unlike all the others, his ideology requires that the other factions be amenable to diplomacy. Talents won't come if you're a war zone.
Funnily enough, Santiago and Lal have this in common: if they become the only faction on the planet, they won't know what to do with themselves.
